Springbok rugby players Bevin Fortuin and Gaffie du Toit have signed with the South Western District Eagles, the Kaapse Son newspaper reported on Tuesday.

In a massive boost for the Southern Cape outfit, SWD president Stag Cronjé, confirmed that all contracts have been signed.

He also confirmed that Springbok Sevens player Jeandré Blom, who was the most accurate kicker in the Vodacom Cup a few weeks ago, as well as Maori hooker Junior Leota and Brive lock Wikus Liebenberg will join Johann Lerm’s training squad in the next couple of days.

“Du Toit’s contract with Toulouse expires on June 15. We expect him and Leota to arrive soon after that.
“Fortuin, Blom and Liebenberg will join us on Monday,” Cronjé said. Cronjé said he was extremely happy with the acquisitions.

“This clearly shows how desperate we are to play in next year’s Currie Cup competition. These players could contribute hugely to our efforts.

“A player like Gaffie is anything but over the hill. I watched him on TV a week ago and he was outstanding. We knew from the very beginning that he was the type of player we needed.

“To be a regular member of Toulouse’s 22-member squad shows that there is still a lot of rugby in him left,” Cronjé added. Lerm said he was very excited about the second half of the season.

“We brought in experience and depth. “Bevin plays fullback and centre, Gaffie is currently on fullback and wing, Blom is at home at scrumhalf, flyhalf and fullback, while Leota is as good a prop as he is at hooker.

“All of a sudden I have a lot more options. “Ricardo Croy, who was my flyhalf up to now, is also an excellent scrumhalf,” he said.
