Flyhalf Wesley Dunlop’s goalkicking efforts and two tries by wing Rocco Jansen paved the way for the Eastern Province Mighty Elephants’ vital 29-16 win over the Griffons in a Currie Cup first division rugby match played at the EPRU Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors led 16-13 at halftime. There was little to choose between the two sides in the first half with the boots of Dunlop and his opposite number, Kennedy Tsimba, playing dominant roles.

Dunlop succeeded with two penalties and a conversion in the first half, while Tsimba kicked three penalties and a conversion. Scrappy play marked the opening 30 minutes and it needed some magic by scrumhalf Marlon Lewis to bring the game alive for Eastern Province.

He turned defence into attack with a fine run and then a flip pass to Jansen enabled the wing to split the defence wide open for the first try of the match.

However, the Grifffons were not to be outdone and wing Fabian Juries put his team ahead just before the interval when he intercepted a pass to run all of 40m to score under the poles.

EP turned the match around during the opening 10 minutes of the second half when Jansen outsprinted the defence to score and this was followed up by a good try by captain De Wet Barry after he had broken through the defence.

It was then left to Dunlop to add two further penalties to secure the valuable points for the home side.

The pick of the EP pack was undoubtedly flank Jacques Potgieter, who gave a fiery performance throughout the 80 minutes.
