Five Hurricanes players could be dropped for this weekend’s Super Rugby match against the Reds after they breached team protocol.

The full details are not known yet but the Hurricanes have acknowledged a “small group of players” did breach team protocol while the squad were in South Africa.

It is understood that several players broke a curfew before the 32-15 loss to the Sharks and they could be dropped for this weekend as punishment.

In a statement the Hurricanes said,”The matter has been dealt with internally and Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd will be happy to discuss it further at tomorrow’s (Thursday’s) scheduled media session once the team to play the Reds in Wellington on Saturday has been named.”

Hurricanes assistant coach Jason Holland said that they had not decided yet on what action would be taken against the players.

“We set pretty high standards around our protocols and if there are any little minor discretions, there will be consequences,” he told New Zealand radio.

The breach of team protocol could be part of the reason that the Hurricanes did not perform against the Sharks at the same level they did when they beat the Lions 17-50 a week earlier.

The Hurricanes lost 32-15 to the Sharks on Saturday.
