The Western Force have already identified Springbok hooker Bismarck du Plessis as one player who could fill one of their two vacancies for foreigners in the 2009 Super 14 season.

Earlier this week the ARU rubber stamped the rule change that will allow each Australian team to field two foreign “marquee” players in a move that is designed to make the Super 14 more appealing.

The move allows teams to play players who will assist the team but not at the detriment to the Wallabies.

A Force official yesterday revealed to The West Australian that the club had made contact with du Plessis who is said to have an escape clause in his South African contract if he was concerned about game time.

If so, he can make himself available because the Springboks’ World Cup winning captain, John Smit, is back in Durban after a season with French side Clermont and will not want to finish his career on the Sharks’ bench.

Even if du Plessis is available and affordable, the ARU will have the final say on whether he joins the Force because the national body wants only foreign players who suit their development strategy.
