Former All Blacks coach Henry joins Argentina

New Zealand’s Rugby World Cup winning coach in 2011 Graham Henry has agreed to join Argentina as an adviser ahead of the new Four Nations tournament later this year.

The Argentine Rugby Union made the announcement on Wednesday and said Henry would be given a one-year contract beginning in April.

Henry resigned from coaching New Zealand after winning the World Cup last year.

He will assist Argentina coach Santiago Phelan as Argentina embarks on difficult home-and-away matches in the Four Nations against three of rugby’s powers – South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

“It makes me very happy that Henry is joining us,” Phelan said. “He’s coming to work with us and make our play better.”

Being part of the Four Nations – formerly known as the Tri-Nations – is viewed as a major step for Argentina, where the game remains decidedly amateur.

Argentine players travel mainly to Europe to play as professionals, making it difficult to pull together national team training sessions.
