New Stormers head coach Rassie Erasmus looks set to include Western Province coach Gary Gold, as well as former Springbok centre Brendan Venter, to the Super 14 franchise’s coaching staff ahead of next year.

Gold and Venter have both been involved in the Stormers’ pre-season training thus far, but Western Province media manager Gavin Lewis would not deny nor confirm that the pair would, in fact, be assisting Erasmus with the Super 14 side in 2008.

“At the moment, I would have to say that any suggestions as to who will be on the coaching staff is nothing more than speculation,” Lewis said.

“There has been no official announcement. That will be made next Friday only.”

Gold, a former head coach of London Irish in England’s Premiership, proved his worth as a coach in the Absa Currie Cup by very nearly guiding WP to a semi-final place after taking over from Kobus van der Merwe at the start of the campaign.

WP were the only side to beat the Free State Cheetahs, the eventual Currie Cup champions, and Erasmus’s former team.

Venter, who is a medical doctor by profession, was capped 19 times for the Springboks at centre (playing in the 1995 and ’99 World Cups), and has earned a reputation as being something of a tactical genius, helping London Irish to the Powergen Cup title in 2002 – the club’s first trophy in over 100 years. Interestingly, Gold was at Venter’s side during that triumph, with WP flanker Jake Boer the captain of the team.

Both Gold and Venter could prove valuable additions to the Stormers coaching staff, whilst current Bok backline coach Allister Coetzee has also been mentioned as an addition to Erasmus’s management team.
