Jimmy Gopperth appears set to wear the number 10 jersey for the Blues in the 2009 Super 14. The Blues lost their first choice first five when Nick Evans left after just one season.

Gopperth the former Hurricanes No 10 has signed a one-year deal with the Albany-based North Harbour province and was as loaned to North Harbour by Wellington for this year’s Air New Zealand Cup.

He has impressed for the Harbour team and has even captained the side in his debut season.

Now looks almost certain to hand in his Hurricanes’ No 10 jersey for the Blues’ one following his signing with North Harbour.

Nick Evans and Isa Nacewa both left the Blues for European contracts which left the Auckland based franchise in desperate need of a quality pivot.

Gopperth says that he was looking forward to the next 12 months knowing that his short-term future was secure.

“I’ve really been enjoying myself within this environment and look forward to being involved next year with such a talented squad,” Gopperth told Yahoo!Xtra Sport.

Gopperth started the Super 14 season well but as the season wore on he was dropped in favour of Taranaki’s Willie Ripia.

When the Air New Zealand Cup came around he was third in line behind rookie Daniel Kirkpatrick and All Black halfback Piri Weepu in the first-five rankings.

North Harbour chief executive said: “Jimmy has done an excellent job leading our young group of players this year.

“In spite of a frustrating season in terms of results, it is very pleasing to secure the commitment from Jimmy for the 2009 season.”
