An intercept try on full-time by centre Werner Griesel secured another bonus point victory for the Griffons in Welkom on Saturday.

Their 36-25 victory helped the First League champions to a full-house of 10 points after two rounds in the competition.

Griffons captain Nicky Steyn led from the front and scored two tries as his team had to stage a fightback after being 12-3 down at the break.

His storming runs inspired his team-mates as they eventually caught up with the Elephants and scored a vital fourth try.

Veteran flyhalf Kennedy Tsimba scored 16 points with the boot, which eventually was the difference between the two teams, with former Griffons-flyhalf Johan van Niekerk, only converting one of his team’s tries.

Centre Griesel and former Cheetah Eddie Fredericks helped stage the fight-back and Steyn and his flankers Albert Parsons and Marnus Briedenhann never stopped working.

This Elephants outfit can no longer be taken for granted and they can only improve as the season progress.
