Griffons make one change for Bulls Currie Cup match

The Griffons will be minus Jandre Blom in Saturday’s Absa First Division rugby match in Welkom against hoodoo opponents, the Elephants, after the Cheetahs recalled the scrumhalf for their match against the Blue Bulls.

The match starts at 4pm. Former Shimla, Danny Theron, will start in Blom’s place in one of the two changes to the team that beat the Leopards comprehensively last weekend.

The second change is a merit selection where former Griquas winger Darryl Coeries, replaces Shane Hancke. Good news for the Griffons is that star lock Ockie van Zyl has recovered from injury and has been included on the bench.

The Griffons haven’t beaten the Elephants in years, but they have to break this hoodoo if they are to finish second on the log. They have a real change to host a semi-final in Welkom, but can’t afford to lose to the Elephants again.

Should they surprise the Elephants on Saturday, the final fixture against the Eagles could be the deciding fixture.

Coach Harry Pienaar is very optimistic. With Ockie van Zyl returning and Isak van der Westhuizen recovering from injury, he should have his top locks available next week.

Griffons:

Cecil Afrika; Darryl Coeries, Jacko Jackson, Hennie Daniller, Howard Noble; Kennedy Tsimba, Danny Theron; Ashley Johnson, Shaun Botha, Albert Parsons, Windpomp van Rooyen, Francois Uys, Ronnie Uys, Andries Kruger, Sarel Louw.

Replacements – KleinJan Ferreira, Gert Greyling/Jaco Louw, Ockie van Zyl, Jonothan Mokuena, Hugo Kleynhans, Werner Griesel, Shane Hancke.
