The Griffons have leap-frogged the Eagles into second place on the First League log of the Absa Currie Cup after beating the Elephants 33-20 in Welkom on Saturday – thanks to a super effort by veteran flyhalf Kennedy Tsimba.

Tsimba is relishing his second rugby life and scored two tries and a total of 23 points in his side’s victory.

The Griffons scored four tries for a vital bonus point and they have a realistic chance of staging a semi-final in Welkom in a fortnight.

They have a better points difference than the Eagles and the winner of the game in George next Saturday will also have an opportunity to play in a promotion-relegation match, probably against Boland.

Elephants’ winger Norman Nelson scored a brace of tries, but is wasn’t enough for the team finishing with the wooden spoon in Currie Cup rugby.

Scorers:

Griffons:
Tries: Kennedy Tsimba (2), Cecil Afrika, Howard Noble.
Conversions: Tsimba (2).
Penalties: Tsimba (3).

Elephants:
Tries: Norman Nelson (2), Sivyuile Kobokana.
Conversion: Deon Booysen.
Penalty: Booysen.
