The Griffons will be without teenage fullback Cecil Afrika and veteran flyhalf Kennedy Tsimba when they face the Leopards in a Currie Cup friendly fixture in Welkom on Friday afternoon.

Both Afrika and Tsimba have been thorns in the Leopards’ side in the past and the news would be welcomed in Potchefstroom.

Afrika has been called up for national Sevens duty and Tsimba isn’t fit enough to be thrown in at the deep end after a pre-season of technical work with the Cheetahs.

Two youngsters, Afrika’s Harmonie Sport School team-mate Taro Maarman, and young flyhalf Tiaan van Wyk will start at 15 and 10 against the Leopards.

Van Wyk is a local youngster who represented the Union at junior level and has been going through his paces with the legendary Eric Herbert.

The Griffons don’t have many imports from Cheetah country at this stage, but Shimlas winger Rudolf Steyn will don the Purple jersey for the first time. Flanker Marnus Briedenhann and loosehead prop Keven Stevens also start in the Griffons jersey.

The rest of Nicky Steyn’s squad represented the Union in the Vodacom Cup competition.

Griffons team:

Tertius Maarman; Rudolf Steyn, Werner Griesel, Kurt-Lee van Vuuren, Darryl Coeries; Tiaan van Wyk, Bronwyn Gysman; Nicky Steyn (C), Marnes Briedenhann, Shaun Botha, Windpomp van Rooyen, Sandile India, Gert Greyling, Hershol Johnson, Kevin Stevens.

Reserves: Romano Sibiya, Sewes Oosthuizen, Alec van Staden, Bruce Scheepers. Balla Slabbert, Virgil Russell, Shane Hancke.
