Griquas beat Leopards in Currie Cup

GWK Griquas hammered the Platinum Leopards to the tune of 36 points to 11 — four tries, two conversions, three penalties and a drop goal to one try and two penalties in their First Division Currie Cup match on Saturday afternoon.

However Griquas started of the match slowly, making a number of errors early on but came to light in the second half, earning themselves a bonus to keep themselves in the Currie Cup hunt.

Leopards drew first blood when they were awarded a penalty in the second minute, converted by Clayton Durand, but Griquas were awarded one threeminutes later to even the score board. Leopards scored the first try in the 15th minute, when fullback, Russel Jeacocks went over for an unconverted try, with the visitors going ahead, 8-3.

Thirteen minutes later, Naas Olivier kicked his second penalty, taking the Griquas score to within two popints, 8-6, but in the 32nd minute, Egon Seconds, Griqua’s wing was sent on his way to score a brilliant try, after fullback Riaan Viljoen made a fantastic break, the conversion going astray, but the home team gaining the lead for the first time in the match, 11-8.

Five minutes later, Viljoen succeeded in kicking a mammoth drop goal from 37 meters out to stretch the lead to 14-8, and just on halftime, Griquas scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius went over to score his first try, with the conversion striking the upright.

The second half began in a similar vein to the first, with both teams being awarded penalties, in the 5th minute to Griquas and 7th minute to Leopards, Olivier’s from 25 meters in from touch and 28 meters out, score 22-11 in favour of the home team.

Sarel Pretorius went over for his second try of the match, after Leopards had a scrum just outside their try line, which Griguas won with Pretorous scoring for Naas Olivier to convert.

With three minutes left in the match, replacement flank for the home team, Rohan Kitshoff barged his way over from a set scrum, close the Leopards try line and Olivier had no problem from in front of the posts to convert, taking the final score to 36 to GWK Griquas and 11 to the Platinum Leopards.
