Former Valke winger Dewald Pretorius enjoyed a happy homecoming in Kempton Park on Friday afternoon as he scored five tries for the Griquas in their 67-20 rout of the luckless Valke.

Griquas came to the east Rand with four former Valke players in Pretorius, number eight Sean Plaatjies, fullback Riaan Viljoen and hooker Ryno Barnes and three of them made their way onto the scoreboard.

The strongly build Pretorius used his pace and power to terrorise the Valke, but the foundation was laid among the forwards where Griquas annihilated the Valke pack.

Tightheads are a scarce commodity in South African rugby, but the Valke desperately need someone who can stand up to the rigours of provincial rugby.

Griquas props Stef Roberts and Albertus Buckle looked like world beaters and, luckily for the Valke, Griquas’ two best tightheads Bees Roux and Ruaan du Preez didn’t start.

The Valke scored three tries and there was a hint of pace among their backs, but at this rate they will defend more than attack this year.
