Match detail

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway at Tafel Lager Park in Kimberley.

4.00: A couple of reset scrums slow play down after the Pumas carried the ball behind their in-goal for a Griquas scrum.

5.00: The Pumas almost win a scrum-penalty turnover, but the ball is recycled by the home team before winning a penalty. Pieter Jansen van Vuren is sorting out his bootlaces, which look to have been ripped apart. He’s taping his boots. Griquas kick to the corner.

6.00: Griquas lose their lineout; however, they win back possession and are on the attack. Another offside penalty allows the hosts to take a shot at goal.

7.00: PENALTY! George Whitehead opens the scoring. 3-0

9.00: Both teams going to the boot in the early stages as they look for territory. Griquas win possession from a knock-on, but no advantage leads to a scrum inside their half.

11.00: A solid scrum from the home team, this time, which leads to Zak Burger pinning the Pumas inside their half with a raking grubber. Lots of stops in the game allows the water boys to supply some high-quality H2O to the players because it is a scorching 38 degrees in Kimberley.

13.00: James Verity-Amm’s mini-break comes to nothing after Burger is stripped of possession. Griquas counter-attack from deep after a poor kick by the visitors.

14.00: NO TRY! Burger breaks around the ruck and darts into the Pumas’ half. The No 9 chips the ball over the defender, regains possession, and dives over the line to score. Somehow, the scrumhalf is turned as he tries to dot the ball down, but the hosts do get a 5m scrum.

15.00: BIG SCRUM by the Pumas, they win a penalty after Mox Mxoli collapses the scrum under pressure from Ruan Kramer.

18.00: The Pumas decide to kick to the corner after Mxoli is caught offside at the ruck.

20.00: TRY! Good defending by Griquas to repel the initial attack; however, they give away another penalty. Ginter Smuts takes the quick-tap, and darts over for the score. Superb play by the scrumhalf. 3-5

21.00: CONVERSION! Eddie Fouche adds the extras. 3-7

22.00: Simon Westraadt is offside at the lineout allowing Whitehead a chance to reduce the gap to one.

24.00: PENALTY! Whitehead will not miss from in front. 6-7

25.00: After some choice F-bombs by Pumas skipper Van Vuren, his team give away three cheap points then kick the restart into touch. Griquas opt for a scrum on the center circle.

26.00: Francois Kleinhans does not roll away, which gives Whitehead another opportunity at three points.

27.00: MISS! Whitehead pulls his kick wide. 6-7

29.00: The game is scrappy, both teams struggling to hold onto the ball as chances go begging in the heat of the Northern Cape.

30.00: Anthony Volmink is isolated inside his half, the Pumas targetted the breakdown, winning the penalty. Van Vuren points to the posts.

31.00: PENALTY! Fouche makes no mistake from in front. 6-10

32.00: BIG MISTAKE as Whitehead’s restart sails into touch. The Pumas opt for a halfway line scrum. Energy levels are down, the heat is definitely playing a part as these two undercooked teams struggle with their early tournament fitness.

34.00: Darrien Landsberg rips the ball from Kramer, who tries to hold on, Fouche boots the turnover deep into the opposition’s half, and the ball rolls into touch inside the 22.

36.00: The Pumas win their lineout and are attacking with pick-and-drives inside the 22; however, they lose the ball, and the hosts clear.

37.00: TRY! Niel Maritz scores a sensational try after Devon Williams drew his man and sent the winger away. Maritz raced into the opposition’s 22 before swerving around the cover defender to dot down by the posts. 6-15

39.00: CONVERSION! The kick is good. 6-17

40.00: The Pumas give away a penalty, Whitehead kicks to the middle of the visitors’ 22 for a last attacking opportunity of the first half.

41.00: TRY! The hooter sounds before the Griquas’ forwards power their way over the whitewash; however, the ball is held-up by some superb defending by Francois Kleinhans and his leg. The TMO, after a long review, decides that Victor Sekekete controlled the ball and managed to get it down for the score. 11-17

42.00: MISSWhitehead misses again. 11-17

The halftime score was Griquas 11 Pumas 17

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in Kimberley.

43.00: A forward pass kills a breakaway opportunity by flyer Maritz. Scrum to the hosts inside the Pumas’ 22.

45.00: Superb work by the Pumas to hold up Griquas’ attack. USE IT OR LOSE IT! Scrum to the visitors.

46.00: Accidental offsides by Kramer leads to an attacking scrum for the hosts.

48.00: Another turnover by the Pumas. They sack the maul and win the turnover. Scott Mathie will be unimpressed with his forwards.

52.00: PENALTY! Fouche extends his side’s lead to nine. 11-20

56.00: More replacements take the field as Mathie shakes up his backline. Volmink comes off and Ashton Davids comes on at fullback.

57.00: More mistakes by Griquas, but they win a penalty; Whitehead boots the ball into the opposition’s 22.

60.00: TRY! A strong driving maul sees the host cross for their second. Adre Smith splintered off the maul before crashing over for a simple score. 16-20

61.00: CONVERSION! The kick is good. 18-20

65.00: This match is going down to the wire, still lots of time for either team to win this.

68.00: Superb work by Griquas, but the visitors keep possession and are attacking in the home team’s 22.

70.00: TRY! Williams scores a sublime try after Fouche sucked in defenders before sending Phumzile Maqondwana through a gap. Maqondwana tripped but managed to offload to the supporting Williams, who raced away to dot down under the sticks. 18-25

71.00: CONVERSION! The kick is good. 18-27

73.00: Griquas win a penalty; they opt for a shot at goal.

75.00: PENALTY! WHITEHEAD makes it a one-score game. 21-27

77.00: Kasenda is tackled high, which allows Whitehead to kick a big kick deep into the opposition’s half.

78.00: Yet again, the Pumas win an important turnover at the lineout; a sixth of the game.
