Stormers beat Griquas in Kimberley

The Griquas and Stormers are set to face each other for the first time in Super Rugby Unlocked, with both teams coming into this game on the back of a defeat.

Despite having trailed at half-time in all three of their games in Super Rugby Unlocked, the Stormers have picked up two wins from their three games in the competition thus far.

  • The Stormers have conceded just 18 penalties in their three games in Super Rugby Unlocked, 10 fewer than any other team in the competition.
  • James Verity-Amm has gained 9.5 metres per carry in Super Rugby Unlocked, the most of any player to have made at least 20 carries throughout the competition.
  • Salmaan Moerat (31) has made the joint-most tackles of any player in the 2020 Super Rugby Unlocked campaign, while team-mate Frans Malherbe (29) has made the second most.
  • Griquas are still winless in the tournament, while the Cape franchise has won two and lost once.

3.00: Ruhan Nel is on for Edwill van der Merwe, who has limped off, the winger looks done for the day.

6.00: Griquas win a penalty, and clear to the opposition’s 10m, but the ball is turned over, and the Stormers attack.

8.00: TRY! Ernst van Rhyn scores after David Meihuizen stole Griquas’ lineout. Warrick Gelant stood up a defender, sent the ball to Nel. Nel drew the last defender and popped to the flanker to score the game’s first try. 0-5

10.00: MISS! The conversion is wide. 0-5

12.00: Another big scrum by the home team’s pack, this time they win a penalty after Steven Kitshoff falls foul of the ref.

13.00: PENALTY! Tinus de Beer, kicking with the breeze, slots the long-range penalty. 3-5

16.00: Stormers win a kickable penalty near the Griquas 22, Willemse calls for the tee.

17.00: PENALTY! Willemse makes no mistake this time. 3-8

20.00: Brilliant play by Willemse, he makes the tackle on his line, rips the ball off the attacker; Gelant clears. That was a great chance for seven for the hosts. They need to look after the ball better.

21.00: Water break in Kimberley where it is a scorching 33 degrees. 

23.00: Gelant keeps his forwards going forward with a wonderful banana clearance to the opposition’s 22. Griquas manage to upset the visitors’ lineout and win a scrum after the fourth handling error by Dobson’s team.

26.00: Superb defence by the hosts to stop a certain score. Burger and Gideon van der Merwe was immense in stopping the wide attack. The scramble defence has been good so far from Scott Mathie’s men.

28.00: Ernst van Rhyn cannot latch on to Gelant’s crossfield kick; instead, the ball rolls out.

29.00: Another magical clearance by Gelant, he’s got the ball on a string today. Griquas with an important defensive lineout.

30.00: The Stormers keep the ball alive, looking to run out from their 22. They have gone through several phases before getting a penalty for a neck-high tackle on Nel.

31.00: Willemse boots the penalty-kick over the dead-ball line, that was poor at any level of rugby. Scrum to Mathie’s men inside the Cape side’s half.

33.00: BIG SCRUM by the Stormers. They win an important penalty. Willemse will be relieved.

34.00: TRY! Neethling Fouche, who won the scrum-penalty, scores after taking Gelant’s delayed pass near the try line. Gelant is causing all manner of problems for the home team. He sucked in Burger and De Beer before offloading to the prop. 3-13

36.00: CONVERSION! Willemse adds the extras. 3-15

38.00: Griquas could do with a score before the interval. They seem to have run out of attacking ideas, and cannot get out of their half.

39.00: The Stormers win possession after Marcel Theunissen pounces on the loose ball at the back of the Griquas ruck.

40.00: Some reset scrums at the end of the first stanza.

41.00: Big scrum by the visitors, they win the scrum-penalty after the opposition walked around the set-piece and did not stay straight. Willemse will take a shot.

42.00: MISS! Willemse cannot extend his side’s lead after the ball shaves the post. 3-15

43.00: GAME STATS: Griquas have lost three of nine lineouts and one scrum. Their tackling has been poor, missing 17 tackles. The Stormers have enjoyed 60% Territory and 70% possession as the hosts struggle to mount any attacks or keep the ball for long periods.

48.00: TRY! Eduan Keyter knocked-on a counter-attack. Ernst van Rhyn booted the loose ball forward, and SA Sevens star Angelo Davids watches the ball before picking it up and dancing inside the cover defender to score his team’s third. That is a coach-killer and an eight-point swing. 6-20

53.00: TRY! Dan du Plessis finishes off a sublime counter-attack. Juarno Augustus sucked in two defenders before offloading to the supporting Gelant. The fullback played quickly to Rikus Pretorius, who burst through the line, drew the last defender before sending Du Plessis in for the score. 6-25

59.00: Both teams are making changes as they look to increase the tempo with fresh legs.

63.00: There are some tired legs out there, the game has slowed, and the time taken between set-pieces is taking a long time.

66.00: TRY! Juarno Augustus finishes off a sublime attack. The Stormers took a quick-tap penalty and went wide to Davids. The winger beat several players before playing the No 8 inside for the try. 6-32

79.00: Stormers throwing the ball around like a hot potato before the visitors win another penalty for a high tackle.

80.00: Eventually, the hosts manage to win a turnover inside their 22; it’s been a long time since the first stanza. One more lineout, one more attack for the home team. Nothing came of the attack.
