The Bulls’ Super 14 match winning wing Bryan Habana has paid tribute to his team’s 15-man effort to help get him over the ltry-line and record a famous victory over the Sharks in the Super 14 Final at ABSA Stadium on Saturday.

With the hooter almost sounding the end for the Bulls’ hopes of winning the first South African Super rugby trophy since the game turned professional in 1996, Habana made sure the dream would be a reality by scoring the match-winner to confirm the Pretoria-based side’s first final victory in the tournament’s history.

So how did he do it?

“As backs for the Bulls, our aim is to break down our opponents’ defences,” said the Bulls’ hero.

“I think the Sharks were more concerned that I would score in the corner, which led to the gaps opening up for me on the inside”

“It was a matter of taking your chances when you saw them, and I did just that.”

The Bulls wing may have been the one that crossed over the line and denied the Sharks a memorable Super 14 victory, but it was definitely down to a team effort – something Habana agreed with wholeheartedly.

“We come from a very close knit rugby family,” Habana said.

“I felt I owed something to the team after getting a yellow card in the Currie Cup Final two years ago.

“However, I can’t take all the credit. It was a 15-man effort as soon as Victor [Matfield] prevented the ball from going out.

“We never gave up, and the win proves that.”
