Hooker David Hall has received a medical clearance and has subsequently signed to join the Crusaders squad for the the 2011 season.

The 30-year-old thought that his days in Rugby were over a few weeks ago having recovered from a knee injury he picked up a year ago and then failing to break into the Stags 22.

“I thought it had all gone down the gurgler,” Hall told the Southland Times about the prospect of again playing Super Rugby.

Hall wasn’t expected to be contracted by the Highlanders and was even contemplating turning his focus back to cricket during the summer, potentially lining up for the Southland Hawke Cup team.

Things changed quickly though when he he received word from the Crusaders who wanted him as one of their three hookers for 2011.

“I’m just looking forward to getting up there … This is a fresh start for me,” a delighted Hall said yesterday.

Hall will be able to reunite with his former Southland Boys’ High School first XV team-mate Corey Flynn who is one of the other hookers in the Crusaders squad.

Hall will be joined by 22-year-old Stags prop Nic Barrett, who also signed with the Crusaders for 2011.

Both players will however return to Southland for the ITM Cup after the Super Rugby season.

Meanwhile the Crusaders have revealed that they will play three pre-season matches ahead of the inaugural Super Rugby competition in 2011.

The schedule is as follows:

Saturday, January 29 v Reds in Cairns, Australia;
Saturday, February 5 v Melbourne Rebels in Melbourne, Australia;
