Hayman set to join Newcastle

Newcastle Falcons will unveil a major new international signing at a press conference on Wednesday morning.

The Falcons have been heavily linked with a blockbusting move for New Zealand prop Carl Hayman in recent weeks, with the Mail on Sunday claiming just 48 hours ago that he would sign a ‘350,000-a-year deal.

The 27-year-old is contracted to Otago until the end of the 2009 season but his NZRU deal expires after the World Cup.

And Hayman, widely regarded as one of the best props in the game, could well be heading for Kingston Park as John Fletcher plots the way ahead after a bottom-half finish in his first season in the Falcons hot-seat.

The fact Newcastle have been cutting their wage bill in recent weeks will only add to the reports that Hayman is on his way to the Falcons.

This news comes on the back of the Otago Rugby Union (ORU) stating that Hayman was not for sale. Although an official statement released by the ORU on Monday said they would support Hayman whatever he decided.

“Carl has made no final decision, but if and when he does, we will support him whatever that decision is,” the statement said.

Otago chief executive Russell Gray said there would be no hard feelings towards Hayman if he did leave the province.

“It will obviously be a great shame for New Zealand and Otago rugby, but Carl has given a fair bit to us over the years.”
