The Highlanders must have felt relief as the whistle blew as they had to hold off a late charge to beat the Force 25-22 in Dunedin.

Both sides scored three tries and converted two, and the difference in the end came down to the Highlanders’ Ben Blair kicking one more penalty than his opposite Cameron Shepherd.

The Force led 15-8 at half-time, and it was not until the 60th minute of play that the Highlanders took the lead for the first time, before the Force came back with a late try to narrow the gap.

Jason MacDonald, Josh Blackie and Vilimoni Delasau scored tries for the Highlanders with Ben Blair adding 10 points with the boot.

Cameron Shepherd crossed twice for the Force and kicked seven further points; Gareth Hardy also picked up a try.

The Highlanders move to 22 points in temporary fifth on the table – the force are anchored at the bottom but do pick up a bonus point to be on 2.

After the match Scott Staniforth of the Force was cited by SANZAR for an incedent in the 21st minute.
