The Highlanders have lost another first-choice outside back from the Rebel Sport Super 14. Wing and centre Matt Saunders was forced to withdraw from the squad today because of a dislocated shoulder.

‘It’s terribly bad luck for him and us’, coach Greg Cooper said today, ‘I feel for Matt personally but it’s a blow to the team as well especially after losing Paul Williams last week.

Williams had to withdraw because of the lingering effects of a broken leg he sustained when playing for the Highlanders in 2003.

Saunders, 23, has played 12 games for the Highlanders since 2004 and scored five tries.

Saunders dislocated the shoulder during training in Queenstown and a medical assessment this week determined that he will need to undergo an operation.

He will be replaced by Jason Kawau who was a member of the Highlanders wider training group. Kawau played for Southland in the Air New Zealand NPC last year.
