Hurricanes beat Highlanders in Dunedin

on

The Highlanders have played the Hurricanes 35 times in Super Rugby since 1996, the Landers have won 20 games and lost 15 times.

The home team shades this contest by a slender margin, with the Highlanders winning nine Super Rugby matches and losing eight times in 17 games in Dunedin.

  • The Highlanders picked up a 38-21 win in their last Super Rugby game against the Hurricanes (Rd 10, 2020), their second win in eight games against them.
  • The Dunedin men are hunting for back-to-back wins against the Canes for the first time since 2016.
  • Tony Brown’s side has lost five of their last seven Super Rugby home games, as many as they had lost in their 35 home games prior (W28, D2).
  • The Hurricanes are on the hunt for their 200th win in Super Rugby competitions; only the Crusaders (263) and Brumbies (208) have previously reached the mark.
  • The Landers are the only team yet to concede a turnover in their own 22m zone this Super Rugby Aotearoa season; furthermore, their three offloads in that area are the most of any team in the competition.
  • Ash Dixon has crossed for a try in three of his four starts in home games in Super Rugby Aotearoa, including one in his last home game against the Hurricanes (Rd 10, 2020).

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

In the meantime, why not have a look at the match preview.

Super Rugby Milestone: Aaron Smith overtakes his mate Ben Smith as the most capped Highlander in Super Rugby. The scrumhalf walked out with his children for his 154th Super Rugby match in an 11-year stint in Dunedin.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway at Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin.

2.00: Late Change: Jona Nareki has been withdrawn from tonight’s match. Connor Garden-Bachop comes off the bench and onto the left-wing. James Lentjes is on the bench for Garden-Bachop.

4.00: MISS! Josh Ioane misses in front of the Zoo. Wow! 0-0

6.00: PENALTY! Jordie Barrett kicks a monster 50+metre kick to open the scoring. 0-3

8.00: Barrett clears the danger after another penalty goes against Tony Brown’s men.

9.00: TRY! Jordie Barrett finishes a slick attacking move between the forwards and backs. Barrett slipped Patelesio Tomkinson’s tackle to score the first try of the contest. 0-8

10.00: CONVERSION! Barrett converts his try. 0-10

13.00: The Landers look dangerous with ball-in-hand, especially running from deep. They win a string of penalties at the ruck and lineout, which allows Mitch Hunt to kick to the corner.

16.00: The Highlanders go through a 12-phase attack inside the 22. Pari Pari Parkinson and Ethan de Groot go close before the ref awards a penalty.

17.00: NO TRY! WOW! Shannon Frizell knocks-on over the try line, but the Highlanders had several advantages for infringements. I’d expect Brendon Pickerill to speak to Ardie Savea. Landers opt for a scrum.

20.00: Marino Mikaele-Tu’u and Patelesio Tomkinson botch the back-row move, the number eight runs behind Tomkinson, and is pinged for obstruction. The Canes dodged a bullet.

22.00: The Canes give away a penalty at the scrum, Hunt kicks to the corner –– that’s two chances for points passed up.

24.00: YELLOW CARD! Tyrel Lomax goes to the bin. 0-10

26.00: Dane Coles wins an important turnover on his line; that’s three missed chances at three points, two try-scoring opportunities wasted.

27.00: Bryn Evans stays offsides, Canes clear the danger. The Highlanders own possession (76%) and territory (84%), but cannot score.

29.00: NO TRY! SO CLOSE! A mix-up between Coles and his jumpers sees the hosts win the loose ball and counter-attack from inside their half. Smith and Frizell combine to the 22. Hunt breaks the line, throws a long skip-pass to Freedom Vahaakolo, who is stopped short by Barrett. The winger – for some reason – did not reach for the line; instead, he tried to set-up another phase and lost the turnover-penalty when Salesi Rayasi isolated him. 0-10

32.00: Jason Holland’s side wins another penalty, this time at the lineout; however, the penalty is overturned for “poor sportsmanship” for a “head-rub”. The replay shows that nothing like that took place. TV commentators call it ‘rubbish!’

34.00: TRY! Hunt kicks to the corner, and finally, at the fifth attempt, Bryn Evans crashes over after breaking off the side of the driving maul. That is much-needed but very controversial by referee Pickerill. 5-10

35.00: CONVERSION! Josh Ioane converts. 7-10

37.00: The Highlanders look to run the ball from their 22, all they do is gift the visitors an attacking scrum on the home team’s 22.

39.00: The Hurricanes go through the phases (14), but good defending keeps the Wellington men out before Jordie Barrett and Salesi Rayasi combine for the fullback’s second score. Rayasi ran a straight line, held off two defenders before a chicken-wing offload sent the supporting Barrett away under the sticks. 7-15

40.00: CONVERSION! Barrett adds the extras. 7-17

41.00: The ball is booted into touch by Barrett.

The halftime score was Highlanders 7 Hurricanes 17

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway under the roof in Dunedin.

44.00: TRY! HAT-TRICK! Barrett finishes off another neat combination move between backs and forwards to claim a treble. 7-22

44.00: CONVERSION! Barrett makes no mistake. 7-24

48.00; It’s all Hurricanes as they go in search of the killer blow. The Highlanders cannot afford to not get some points in the next few minutes or this game is gone.

50.00: Hurricanes look to go wide at every chance, they win a penalty at the ruck after Liam Mitchell does not roll away.

53.00: PENALTY! Barrett slots another monster kick (52-metres) to go one-point behind Richie Mo’unga (28) for most points in a Super Rugby Aotearoa match, this season. 7-27

57.00: Both teams starting to empty their benches. Tony Brown needs his bench to bring his side back into the contest, but it does not look like it will be his night. The Canes are dominating proceedings, here.

60.00: We’ve reached the hour-mark, still no second-half points for the hosts, who look bereft of ideas on the attack.

63.00: TRY! Connor Garden-Bachop finishes in the corner after Aaron smith took a quick-tap penalty; it worked a treat because the visitors could not get enough defenders out wide to stop the late replacement from scoring. 12-27

64.00: MISS! Ioane hits the post. 12-27

67.00: Ardie Savea wins another turnover at the ruck, the visitors have been immense in every facet of play, tonight.

70.00: The clock is ticking down, the Landers come again, but the Canes win another turnover, and clear the danger.

77.00: TRY! Peter Umaga-Jensen comes off the bench to claim a five-pointer. 17-27

78.00: CONVERSION! Ioane adds the extras. 19-27

80.00: The Canes win a kickable penalty, Barrett calls for the tee.

81.00: PENALTY! Barrett overtakes Richie Mo’unga for most points in a Super Rugby Aotearoa match, this season.
