Hurricanes beat Highlanders in Dunedin

on

The Hurricanes have won nine of their last 11 Super Rugby games against the Highlanders, including their last three in succession; the last time they won more in succession against them was a five-game stretch from 2006 to 2010.

The Highlanders have won three of their last five home games against the Hurricanes in Super Rugby (L2), more than they had won across the eight prior times they had hosted them in the competition (W2, L6).

  • The Landers have won five of their last seven Super Rugby games at home (L2), including a 37-17 win over Moana Pasifika in their last game on home turf (Round 8, 2022 Super Rugby Pacific).
  • The Canes have lost 10 of their last 14 Super Rugby games against fellow New Zealand opposition (W4); three of their four victories in that span have come against the Landers.
  • The Hurricanes have lost seven of their last 10 Super Rugby games away from home (W3); however, one of their three wins in that term came against the Highlanders (Round 5, Super Rugby Aotearoa 2021).
  • The Hurricanes have made dominant contact on 33 carries per game in the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific season, the most of any team in the competition; only the Brumbies (17) have made fewer per game in this category than the Highlanders (21).
  • The Highlanders have conceded 8.5 penalties per game in 2022, the joint-fewest of any team (also Chiefs – 8.5); the Hurricanes (9.1 per game) are the next best side in this category.
  • The Hurricanes have gained 485 metres per game this season, the most of any team in the competition and 93 per game more than the Highlanders (392).

Players to watch

  • Andrew Makalio has scored one try in each of his last two Super Rugby games after crossing the line only once in
35 appearances in the competition prior.
  • Jordie Barrett has made 12 offloads in the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific season, the joint-most of any player in the
competition (also Quinn Tupaea – 12 and Matt Philip – 12).
