The Highlanders have played the Jaguares just once before in Super Rugby, the Highlanders won 34-8 in Buenos Aires in 2016.

The Jaguares have won three of their last four Super Rugby matches against New Zealand sides (L1), including their last two away fixtures in the Land of the Long White Cloud.

  • The Highlanders have led at half-time in each of their last four Super Rugby games; however, they’ve gone on to win only two of those fixtures (D1, L1).
  • The Jaguares have conceded just seven clean breaks per game this Super Rugby season, fewer than any other team in the competition.
  • Injured lock Guido Petti Pagadizaval has won 47 lineouts (incl. five steals) in Super Rugby 2019, the second most of any player and just one shy of competition leader Rory Arnold (48) of the Brumbies.
  • Ben Smith is out for six to eight weeks and may miss the rest of the tournament before he moves to Europe to play for French club Pau, next season.
  • The Jaguares claimed a rare clean sweep in Australasia last year, winning all their games on tour.

Elliot Dixon walks out with his children to mark the occasion of his 100th Super Rugby game for the Highlanders, a one-club man. Well done, sir.

.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in Dunedin, Otago.

.00: The Highlanders are enjoying some early possession. Should the Jaguares win tonight, they will briefly sit top of the South African Conference.

.00: Felipe Ezcurra has started poorly, two aimless kicks and the scrumhalf almost threw an intercept.

.00: The home team give away another penalty after Jordan Hyland is isolated and does not release.

.00: MISS! Emiliano Boffelli pulls his kick well wide from about 45 metres. 0-0

.00: The hosts have a scrum inside their half. A kicking battle ensues before Matt Faddes decides to run at the defenders.

.00: Sebastian Cancelliere’s run comes to nothing, he beat two defenders before being snaffled by the cover defence.

.00: Liam Coltman is down getting his knee checked. He fell awkwardly at a ruck.

.00: It’s all a bit messy at the moment. The Jaguares are looking to play the percentages, kicking for territory, while the Kiwis are mixing running, quick throws and up-and-unders.

.00: TRY! Matias Moroni dots down for his 7th Super rugby try after Cancelliere’s line-break. The winger burst through some weak defending in midfield and raced into the Otago half before putting a grubber into space for Moroni to chase. The centre beat Josh Ioane to the bouncing ball, gathered and scored. 0-5

.00: CONVERSION! Joaquín Díaz Bonilla adds the extras. 0-7

.00: The game has slowed down since the opening exchanges. More scrums.

.00: Aaron Mauger’s men have an attacking scrum outside the Jaguares 22. Referee Ben O’Keeffe has to tell the Argentinians that he has had enough of their pre-engagement.

.00: Cancelliere wins an important turnover, on his line, and the Jaguares clear. The danger came from a line-break and offload from the previous scrum by Patelesio Tomkinson.

.00: TRY! James Lentjes takes Ioane’s back door pass and dots down for an easy score, his fourth Super Rugby try of his career. Iaone, a young player on the rise, burst through a gap near the goal-line after selling a dummy to Elliot Dixon. 5-7

.00: MISS! Ioane shanks his easy conversion attempt. 5-7

.00: The visitors are attacking with swagger, it’s only their handling that’s stopping them from scoring more points.

.00: PENALTY! Díaz Bonilla makes no mistake from in front. 5-10

.00: TRY! Rob Thompson and Aaron Smith both make line-breaks before Sio Tomkinson puts Faddes away to score his third try of the season to level. The Jaguares’ defence was at sixes and sevens but the angled runs and offloads were sublime. 10-all

.00: CONVERSION! Ioane can’t miss from there. 12-10

.00: The tourists have a penalty advantage after an attacking line-out inside the opposition’s 22. The Highlanders took a man out in the air and went offsides. Mauger’s men have conceded an average of six penalties per game, and only nine shots at goal against them, this campaign. They have, however, conceded four already tonight, and a second shot at goal.

.00: PENALTY! Díaz Bonilla makes no mistake. 12-13

.00: TRY! Superb work at the restart by Tom Franklin, who contested the restart and chased down Javier Ortega Desio. The No. 8 made a mess of gathering the rolling ball. The Highlanders recycled quickly. Ioane sent a pass to Tomkinson, who darted through from close range. Easy as you like. 17-13

.00: CONVERSION! Ioane extends the lead. 19-13

.00: Ioane kicks a penalty to touch on the Jaguares’ 5m.

.00: TRY! Coltman scores his sixth try of the season from a powerful rolling maul. It was textbook as they splintered to the right to set-up the hooker’s five-pointer. 24-13

.00: CONVERSION! Ioane adds another two. 26-13

The halftime score was Highlanders 26 Jaguares 13

.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in New Zealand.

.00: TRY! Marcos Kremer finishes off a sublime move after Díaz Bonilla’s line-break and offload. Jaguares coach Gonzalo Quesada said at halftime that his team needed to score first after the interval. 26-18

.00: CONVERSION! Díaz Bonilla reduces the deficit. 26-20

.00: The Highlanders have an attacking lineout inside the Jaguares’ 22, but the ball is turned over. Ezcurra clears.

.00: Faddes is penalised for a high, dangerous tackle which allows the visitors to clear.

.00: Kremer knocks on; it is only the sixth handling error, although, the hosts have only made two mistakes.

.00: Mayco Vivas is pinged for collapsing, but it seems the ref didn’t know what to do after the scrum went down.

.00: Ezcurra is offsides. Iaone calls for the tee. The benches are being emptied.

.00: PENALTY! Ioane extends his side’s lead to nine. 29-20

.00: Tevita Li, who has been quiet tonight, is down. Iaone kicks the penalty to the 22. Aaron Smith knocks on from the lineout, and the ball is hoofed down the field by the visitors.

.00: Santiago Medrano, who is almost held up by three defenders, manages to get to the ground, but then loses possession because he fell on the wrong side of his support.

.00: Li is off injured. Thomas Umaga-Jensen is on.

.00: It’s become a bit stop-start as players go down. The hosts win another penalty inside the 22 and will take the points.

.00: PENALTY! Ioane adds another three. 32-20

.00: TRY! Ramiro Moyano finishes a flowing move. Agustin Creevy made the line-break in midfield, the ball is sent wide, and Moyano scores in the corner. 32-25

.00: CONVERSION! Díaz Bonilla slots the kick. 32-27

.00: Tomkinson drops the ball out inside his half to give the visitors an attacking platform. It came from the Highlanders missing touch from a penalty.

.00: The Jaguares have a scrum on the Landers’ 5m.

.00: REF! What are you doing! O’Keeffe blows for a penalty to the hosts because he says the Jaguares did not push straight. Garbage call.

.00: The Jaguares are penalised for truck and trailer. It earns the home team a chance of a reprieve.

.00: Lineout on the Jaguares’ 10m. Accidental offsides against the tourists. It’s the fourth penalty in five minutes that the South Americans have conceded.

.00: The Highlanders are milking the clock.

.00: The siren sounds, and then a massive brawl breaks out.

.00: Ioane takes a tap, then bangs the ball into the stands to seal the win.
