Highlanders beat Lions in Dunedin

The first match in Super Rugby on Saturday is in Dunedin where the current champions the Highlanders host the Lions from Johannesburg.

We are waiting for the kick off.

Lima Sopoaga kicks off and we are underway.

1.42: Andries Ferreira has taken a blow already and has to come off for blood. The Lions have the put in for an an early scrum but the Highlanders win the ball and attack.

3.00:The Highlanders move the ball at pace from side to side pressing the Lions back. They go wide again but Malakai Fekitoa passes to Matt Faddes who knocks on with the tryline in front.

4.00: The Lions win the scrum and Jantjies clears the ball into touch.

6.00: The Highlanders win the line out and run the ball but this time Ben Smith loses the ball. Knock on.

8.00: Penalty to the Highlanders from the scrum. Sopoaga takes the shot and nails it. The Highlanders lead.

10.00: The Lions attack but the Highlanders turn the ball over. Fekitoa goes on the attack but the Lions survive as a foot is in touch.

12.00: The Highlanders are dominating. All off a sudden the Lions get the ball from an intercept and Jaco Kriel and races for line, he is caught and the Lions continue the attack. Ruan Combrinck goes over to score but is tackled by Malakai Fekitoa who holds him up. The TMO checks and there is no grounding.

13.00: The Highlanders win a penalty from the resulting 5m scrum. Sopoaga kicks for touch to clear.

17.00: The Highlanders win a penalty in their 22. Jantjies kicks the ball and makes a good amount of ground. The Lions win the line out and attack.

18.00: The Lions look dangerous but Malakai Fekitoa is haveing a huge game on defence and attack. The ball goes into touch.

21.00: Penalty to the Highlanders in their 22. Despite the penalty the Lions are gaining momentum.

23.00: The Highlanders press the Lions back through multiple phases and then Fekitoa chips the grubber through and Matt Feddes gets to it and scores. TRY!  His first in Super Rugby.

25.00: Sopoaga takes the conversion kick and nails it.

28.00: The Highlanders are back on the attack. They are quick with the ball and the Lions have to scramble. The Lions hang on and keep them out. Joe Wheeler comes off for a concussion check.

32.00: Sopoaga goes for an intercept but concedes a penalty. Jantjies takes the shot at posts. He nails it and the Lions are on the board.

34.00: The Highlanders are full of attack but their handling is a little off. Joe Wheeler failed a concussion test so will remain off. The Lions win a scrum in their 22. They clear the ball into touch.

38.00: The Lions win a line out on the half way line. They use the maul and drive over the 10m line. They go wide and Faf de Klerk goes to the air but it goes to the in-goal area. 22 drop out.

40.00: The siren goes for half time. It is half time.

Elton Jantjies kicks off and we are underway with the second half.

42.00:Aaron Smith breaks for the Highlanders, he passes to Ben Smith who races for the line. Courtnall Skosan shows real pace coming across but Smith dives and scores. TRY!

43.00: Sopoaga takes the conversion kick from the touchline. He nails it perfectly.

44.00: The Highlanders are back in. Matt Feddes gets an intercept as the Lions go for a wide ball and Feddes runs all the way and scores. TRY!

46.00: Sopoaga nails the conversion. The Highlanders are in bonus point territory now. 14 points in 4 minutes.

47.00: The Highlanders pounce again but this time there is some luck for the Lions as there is a knock on.

53.00: Scrum penalty on the Highlanders 22m line to the Highlanders on the Lions put in. Sopoaga kicks for touch.

55.00: The Lions are starting to lose the turn over battle. The Highlanders win the ball and attack. They get the ball to Fekitoa from Ben Smith and Fekitoa scores. TRY!

57.00: Sopoaga slots the conversion.

60.00: The Lions look like they are starting to fade. The Highlanders win a line out and Sopoaga goes for a drop goal as they have a player injured. He nails it.

The Lions get back into the match as Rohan Janse Van Rensburg slips through and scores. TRY!

63.00: Jantjies misses the conversion. Short.

65.00: The Highlanders win a short line out on the Lions 22.  They go through a couple of phases but Ben Smith knocks on.

70.00: The Lions work the ball into the Highlanders 22. They go through the phases on attack and get to the 5m line.

72.00: The Highlanders are caught offside and they get a warning. Penalty to the Lions. They choose a scrum.

73.00: The Lions get a free kick – Highlanders not back 10. Lions choose the scrum on the 5m line. Lima Sopoaga comes off. Aaron Smith and Ben Smith come off.

75.00: The Highlanders almost get away and race for the line. The Lions stop the attack and win a penalty.

76.00: The Lions won’t go away and continue to attack. They get the ball into the Highlanders 22. Ruan Ackermann slips over and scores. TRY!

77.00: The conversion is added.

79.00: The Lions are still showing they want to attack. They work the ball into the Highlanders 22 again.

80.00: The siren sounds as  Franco Mostert goes over but is held up. Thats it the Highlanders have won.
