Highlanders beat Waratahs in Sydney

The second match in Super Rugby Round 4 is in Sydney where the Waratahs host the Highlanders in a rematch of last years Semi-final.

We are waiting for the kick off.

The Highlanders kick off and we are underway. The Highlanders are playing in a very bright green and white shirt.

2.00: Both teams testing each other with high balls. The Waratahs decide to run the ball and they win a penalty.

3.00: Beale kicks for the corner but he finds the 22m line.

9.00: The Highlanders push the Waratahs back into their 22. The Waratahs turn the ball over and kick for touch.

10.00: The Highlanders win a line out and they pass the ball down the line. Rob Thompson is tackled but offloads to Ryan Tongia who races for the line and scores. TRY!

12.00: Lima Sopoaga adds the conversion.

14.00: The Highlanders (Malakai Fekitoa) almost get through the Waratahs defence but he is brought to ground by Michael Hooper who also wins the ball back for the Waratahs. The Tahs kick for touch.

16.00: Penalty to the Highlanders in front. Sopoaga lines up the posts – he nails it.

22.00: The Highlanders win a penalty from the scrum. Sopoaga has to move the ball further back a bit as the scrum tore up the field. He lines up the posts. He misses.

26.00: Penalty to the Waratahs. Beale lines up the kick. He misses as well.

28.00: The Waratahs lose the ball forward and the Highlanders (Liam Coltman) picks up the ball and offload to Liam Squire who races for the line and scores. TRY !

29.00: Sopoaga adds the conversion.

32.00: The Highlanders continue to press the Waratahs back in their 22. The ball gets a little loose and the Waratahs turn the ball over and have to kick for touch.

35.00: Ben Smith chips the ball upfield and the Highlanders chase. Matt Faddes gets a toe to the ball and Elliot Dixon chases and gets to the ball and scores. TRY!

36.00: Sopoaga misses the conversion from outwide.

38.00: The Waratahs win a line out in the Highlanders 22. Beale gets the ball and goes for a gap but loses the ball in the tackle.

39.00; The ball pops out from the scrum and Phipps pounces on it to score. However a knock on is ruled so no try. Its half time. This is the first time since 2009 that the Waratahs have been held scoreless in Sydney at half time.

The Waratahs kick off and we are underway with the second half.

43.00: Beale breaks through the Highlanders but has to chip ahead for Phippps who gets to the ball and offloads to Dean Mumm who knocks it on in front of the posts.

44.00: Short arm kick from the scrum to the Waratahs. They take the tap but get nowhere.

45.00: Sopoaga chips the ball ahead and gathers it. He passes to Tongia who races for the line but gets caught. The Highlanders recycle and Fekitoa almost scores but the ball is ruled to have gone forward.

46.00: Dixon snatches the ball from a cross-field kick -beating Guildford – and races for the line and scores. TRY! His first career double.

47.00: Sopoaga misses the conversion.

54.00: The Highlanders work the ball into the Waratahs half. Sopoaga goes for the drop goal and nails it.

56.00: The Waratahs get the ball into the Highlanders 22 and Jed Holloway slips through a gap and scores his first Super Rugby try. Reece Robinson is on for his Super Rugby debut.

56.00: Beale adds the conversion.

62.00: The Highlanders continue to press the Waratahs back in their half. The Waratahs do however turn the ball over and kick upfield. The Highlanders begin their counter attack.

64.00: The Highlanders try the chip kick but the Waratahs (Phipps) manages to get back and prevent a try and then win a penalty. Phipps is replaced by Matt Lucas.

65.00: The Waratahs get through a gap after a break from Michael Hooper and Holloway races for the line, he is tackled by Ben Smith as he goes over but still scores. TRY! The TMO confirms the try.

66.00: Beale misses the conversion but the Highlanders have now lost the bonus point.

67.00: Tom Robertson – who came on four minutes ago – rips the ball off a Waratahs player and charges for the line and scores. TRY!  He was offside but the ref missed it. The try stands.

68.00: Beale adds the conversion.

71.00; All of the momentum is now with the Waratahs. They win a penalty for offside in the Highlanders 22. Beale kicks for touch.

72.00: The Waratahs win the line out and drive over the line with the maul. It looks like Holloway was the try scorer ! If not it was Jack Dempsey but either way its a TRY.

73.00: Beale adds the conversion.

77.00: Still all the Waratahs. They press the Highlanders back but concede a penalty. The Highlanders kick for touch and the line out.

78.00: The Highlanders are using the pick and go to wind down the clock. They have an advantage.

79.00: Penalty to the Highlanders. Hayden Parker kicks for touch and the line out. The Highlanders make a mess of the line out but they get another shot. They win the line out and kick the ball into touch.

The Highlanders have won.
