Carel Hoffman is back in the light blue jersey after more than three years in the rugby desert for Friday night’s game when the Vodacom Blue Bulls play the Leopards in Phalaborwa.

Hoffman was a star for the Blue Bulls’ junior teams in 2002 and 2003, but after playing Vodacom Cup rugby in 2004 decided to hang up his boots.

He is a product of Affies and will play in a loose trio alongside the captain Pieter Meyer and medical student Okkie Kruger.

Kruger, who could miss the game due to his studies, will in that case be replaced by Emile Verster on the flank.

Coach Nico Serfontein stuck with the core of his team that played against the Valke as well as the Lions but will be without SA Under 20-trialists Gerrit-Jan van Velze, Henri Bantjes, Stefan Watermeyer and Berend Botha.

Serfontein will use the game against the Leopards to get some continuity going and to assess the depth of the squad.

“I am not concerned about the result. What is important now is that we build up some momentum. Every game is an opportunity for the players to get used to the new laws.”
