At a time when good referee’s are needed most the reffing fratenity has suffered a sertback.

New Zealand’s most-experienced referee Paul Honiss will be out of action for a few weeks more after it was revealed that he had injured himself.

Honiss was preparing to return to Super 14 duties in a few weeks time when his left calf muscle failed him.

He had been back on duty refereeing in Hamilton club rugby getting ready for his return to top flight rugby after taking some time off for a family illness when the injury struck and he felt some pain in his leg.

“I think the hard grounds might have contributed, I’m not sure,” Honiss told the NZ Herald.

“I thought it was coming right but a scan showed there was a 14mm tear, so I won’t be ready for about another three weeks.”

Honiss had been pencilled in for some Super 14 work later this month possibly in Week 11 but that looks like it will be postponed.
