Hurricanes beat Highlanders in Dunedin

The Highlanders have won the last three matches between them and the Hurricanes but the Hurricanes won the five matches prior to this.

We are waiting for the kick off.


0.01: Beauden Barrett kicks off and we are underway.


2.00: The Highlanders spend the first two minutes attacking but not gaining much ground. They try to boot the ball ahead but the Hurricanes boot it.


2.49: The whistle goes for the first time and its for a high tackle. Penalty to the Hurricanes. Barrett will kick for posts.


3.00: Barrett takes the kick and nails it. Hurricanes lead.


6.00: The first scrum is a mess so it is reset and the Highlanders get the put in. They win the scrum but when they send the ball wide the Hurricanes concede a penalty.


8.00: Chris Noakes takes the penalty kick but misses.


12.00: Highlanders trying to attack in the Hurricanes 25. The defence holds up.


13.00: The Highlanders keep up the attack from 5m out and then Chris Noakes sees a gap, takes it and scores almost under the posts.


14.00: Noakes adds the conversion and nails it. Highlanders lead.


18.00: The Highlanders playing all of the rugby now. They are keeping hold of the ball and going through the phases as the Hurricanes are forced to defend.


19.00: The Hurricanes join a ruck illegally so the Highlanders win a penalty. They kick for touch and have a line out 5 out.


20.00: Adam Thomson takes the ball at the line out and the Highlanders immediately work the ball to the posts. It’s messy and they have a couple of goes at the line but Thomson goes over and scores.


21.00: Noakes adds the conversion.


22.00: Possession at 61% for the Highlanders and territory at 54% so far.


25.00: Penalty to the Hurricanes so Barrett takes the kick in front of the posts and nails it.


27.00: Missed tackles Highlanders 4 Hurricanes 8 so far.


28.00: The match has a strange atmosphere and the crowd is disconnected from the game to a degree. Penalty to the Highlanders so they kick for touch.


32.00: Penalty to the Hurricanes for obstruction. Barrett will kick for posts.


33.00: Barrett nails the penalty and cuts the gap to five points.


34.00: The Highlanders are awarded a penalty so Chris Noakes takes the shot but hits the post and the ball bounces into to play but is kicked out.  


37.00: Hurricanes upping the pressure a little now. They are getting some more ball in the Highlanders half.


38.00: Hurricanes burst into life after Cory Jane breaks. The Highlanders however thwart their attack.


39.00: Highlanders keeping the ball in their 25. They try to wind down the clock. Thats it half time.

The second half is underway.


42.00: The Hurricanes almost get the perfect start as they are awarded a penalty. Barrett takes the kick but misses.


44.00: The Highlanders are still dominating territory and playing the game in the Hurricanes half.


46.00: The Highlanders pile on the pressure, Rico Gear races away and passes to Phil Burleigh who dashes for the corner and may have scored. We go upstairs to check. It didn’t look like he got it down. Replays show its down to millimetres but he is out by an elbow. We go back for a penalty to the Highlanders. Replays also show TJ Perenara could spend some time on the sidelines for coming in contact with a players eyes.


48.00: Noakes takes the penalty and nails it.


The Hurricanes hit straight back by getting the ball after the kick off and somehow they get into the Highlanders 25 without any of the officials noticing that  Chris Eaton was in touch but Faifili Levave scores the Canes first try.


49.00: Barrett takes the conversion and nails it.


54.00:Highlanders putting the Hurricanes under pressure again. They win a penalty and kick for touch. Noakes finds touch about 8m out.


57.00: Hurricanes have a scrum 5m out from their line. They win the scrum and Barrett boots the ball to safety.


59.00: Andrew Taylor takes a big knock from Tamati Ellison in a tackle. Looks like he will be replaced by Alapati Leiua. Thats a blow for the Hurricanes as he was playing well. Perfectly legal tackle though.


60.00: Highlanders are really testing the Hurricanes defence. The Highlanders are camped in the Hurricanes half.


64.00: Hurricanes get into the Highlanders half. Perenara breaks and takes a few players with him. One of the Highlanders tackles a player without the ball so the Hurricanes have a penalty.


65.00:Barratt takes the kick and nails it. Hurricanes lead. 19-17 was the score the last time these two teams played each other.


67.00: Highlanders on attack again in the Hurricanes 25. They win a penalty.


69.00: Highlanders attack from the scrum. They get to 5m out and the Hurricanes are caught offside.


70.00: Mike Delany takes the penalty kick and nails it. Highlanders lead.


73.00: Wow, the Hurricanes have the ball and attack. Julian Savea gets the ball just inside the Highlanders half and races for the line – terrific burst of pace and scores.


74.00: Barrett takes the conversion kick and nails it. Hurricanes lead by 6.


77.00: Highlanders win a penalty but instead of kicking for touch Rutledge takes it quickly and knocks on. Chance gone.


80.00: The siren sound but the Hurricanes steal the ball and kick it out. Hurricanes win.
