Hurricanes beat Highlanders in Dunedin

The Highlanders have had another disappointing season despite showing some promising signs earlier in the season.


In their last six matches they have lost four of the six and the last two have ended in defeat.

They are out of the running for the play offs.

We are waiting for the kick off.


0.01: Aaron Cruden kicks off and we underway. The ball goes out on the full so we have a scrum.


2.00: The Hurricanes win the first line out but it’s scrappy. They look to reset and then get the maul going.


3.00: Cruden makes a break and passes to Smith who passes to Karl Lowe who scores the first try almost under the posts.


6.00: The Hurricanes are looking dangerous and are finding holes. Nonu has started well.


8.00: The Highlanders break a tackle on attack and Cowan pops up in support and then darts off for the line beating the Canes backs to the line and scores!


9.00: Dagg adds the conversion and the scores are level.


10.00: The Hurricanes (Cruden) open up the Highlanders defence again and they have numbers in support and Michael Paterson goes over for the second try.


11.00: Cruden misses the conversion from in front.


13.00: Well well well. Vainikolo makes an initial break in the Highlanders 25, he passes to the support who also make ground and the pass goes to Alando Soakai who darts for the line and scores.


14.00: Dagg misses the conversion.


18.00: Dagg gets isolated and gives away a penalty. The Canes kick for touch and win the line out and run the ball.


20.00: The Highlanders give away another penalty so the Canes kick for touch.


22.00: The Hurricanes win the line out and keep the ball close. They recycle and send the ball wide. The Highlanders defend well but the Canes move the ball to the middle and pop the ball up to Tyson Keats who scores.


23.00: Cruden nails the conversion.


25.00: Michael Hobbs comes off holding his hand like it’s been dislocated. Robbie Robinson comes on. Replays show Conrad Smith stood on his hand and the stud has caused his hand to bleed. We hear now it’s a blood sub so he should be back.


28.00: Jimmy Cowan reads the Hurricanes defence well and pops a pass out to Ben Smith who scores in the corner.


29.00: Israel Dagg misses the conversion from the touchline.


31.00: The Highlanders take a step up in attack and run the ball into the Hurricanes 25.  As they go forward the Canes give away a penalty.


32.00: Dagg will kick for posts…. no they decide to scrum but the Canes hold them out as they run it off the back of the scrum.  


35.00: Keats makes some good ground with a territorial kick and the support traps Dagg. He gets the ball out though and then the Canes counter attack and spread the ball wide and Cruden finds he is open on the wing and scores the bonus point try.


36.00: Cruden converts his own try.


38.00: Well what a game. The Highlanders rumble the ball up to the Hurricanes tryline and they drive over for  Jason Rutledge to score the bonus point try for the Highlanders.


39.00: Dagg nails the conversion from the touchline as the siren sounds.


It’s half time.  


The half time score was Highlanders 24 Hurricanes 26


The second half is underway.


41.00: The Highlanders start well and Alando Soakai gets a line break and passes to Ben Smith who is wide open in front of the line ….the pass goes to ground.


44.00: The Highlanders continue to bash away at the Hurricanes until they give away a penalty so the Canes clear the ball to safety. Cowan is courageous as ever.


47.00: The Hurricanes start to build up a head of steam now and run the ball into the Highlanders 25. A knock on goes in so we have a scrum in the Highlanders 25. Hobbs who came back on is now going off again.


50.00: The Highlanders give away a penalty so Aaron Cruden takes the shot – the first penalty shot of the match – but misses.


54.00: The Highlanders give away a free kick in their 25 but some backchat elevates it to a penalty. Cruden however misses the kick. Weepu warms up on the sideline.


57.00: Nonu makes some ground for the Hurricanes but gives away a penalty. The Highlanders clear the ball but not very well.


63.00: Amazing second half this after the first half where we saw both teams score a bonus points for four tries.


64.00: Kenny Lynn makes a break and passes to Ben Smith for the Highlanders but just can’t get away from Gear who tackles him.


67.00: It’s still the same score as it was at half time. Both teams have got the bonus point and just want to get the four points for the victory.


69.00: The Hurricanes set up an attacking scrum 5m out from the tryline. They win the scrum. Vito drives over and Weepu says there was a try. We go upstairs. No try…held up.


70.00: Hurricanes win the scrum and pass out to Nonu who bashes over and scores the fifth Hurricanes try – under the posts.


71.00: Cruden adds the conversion.


75.00: The Hurricanes are finishing slightly stronger. That may change though as they are going to the bench.


78.00: Robbie Robinson kicks out for Paterson on the wing but the Hurricanes manage to get out and catch him.


80.00: The siren sounds but the Highlanders keep the ball alive as they look to pick up a losing bonus point.


81.00: Highlanders 2m out. They drive again and Bronson Murray scores the try – under the posts.


82.00: Israel Dagg adds the conversion. Thats it.


The final score is Highlanders 31 Hurricanes 33
