Hurricanes hammer Waratahs

The Hurricanes walloped the Waratahs 48-64 in an entertaining Super Rugby Trans-Tasman clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney.

The Hurricanes and NSW Waratahs raised their bats at the famous old cricket ground, combining to notch a century of points in this 16-try score fest.

It’s not often a team scores 48 points and loses; this defeat equals an unwanted record of consecutive losses by the Waratahs in Super Rugby going back to 2012-13.

The Hurricanes might have struggled in Super Rugby Aotearoa, but they love playing the Australian franchise.

This much-needed win is the club’s 16 in the last 17 matches against Aussie opposition, and they will be looking forward to more days like this.

Julian Savea and Billy Proctor both bagged braces for the Canes, who outscored the Tahs 10 tries to six.

Jordie Barrett scored a try, nabbed an assist, and was instrumental in several other scores.

The 24-year-old playmaker told the television viewers how he practiced his batting when he arrived at the ground, saying it was a dream to play at the SCG and to score.

Barrett also kicked seven conversions for a haul of 19 points in this 112-point record total in this fixture between the two sides.

Harry Johnson-Holmes grabbed a brace for New South Wales, and Ben Donaldson kicked four conversions and a penalty for 11 points.

This Super Rugby match was a bottom of the basement clash contested by the two worst teams of Super Rugby Aotearoa and Super Rugby AU

Both teams’ defending leaves much to be desired. It did not take much to score in this game

The Hurricanes ran riot, scoring with ease as they chalked up a half-century of points on the hour.

Jason Holland’s men never looked like losing, despite the Waratahs staying in touching distance for much of the game.

The Canes won two matches in the New Zealand domestic competition.

The Tahs went winless in Australia’s feature rugby event, and after all the holes in the defence, it is clear why they will both struggle to get Ws.

Hurricanes take charge of the first stanza, but the Waratahs stay in touch

The Hurricanes led 33-24 at halftime after tries from Savea, Proctor, Dane Coles, and Barrett.

New South Wales stayed in the game with three scores of their own. Alex Newsome, Angus Bell, and Jake Gordon dotted down for Jason Gilmore’s winless side.

The hosts even led twice, but the power of the opposition, especially their big ball carriers and monsters on the wings, could not be stopped.

As the game wore on, the home team tired, they could not make their one-on-one tackles, and in this profession, that is inexcusable.

Johnson-Holmes crashed over from close range twice after the interval, and Jack Maddocks scored one of the tries of the season.

It will be a front-runner for the try of the 2021 Super Rugby Trans-Tasman tournament, but it will be no consolation to the vanquished.

However, the Canes kept racking up the points. Braydon Iose, Peter Umaga-Jensen, Pepesana Patafilo, and Asafo Aumua all scored in the second stanza to take the tally past 50.

Despite 48 points and six tries, this is a humiliating loss for Gilmore’s charges, who can expect more of these beatdowns.
