The Bulls continued on their downward spiral when they were convincingly beaten 50-22 by the Hurricanes in their Super 14 encounter played at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

This was the Bulls fifth consecutive defeat and their first one back at home after their four match Australia and New Zealand tour. The Hurricanes made their intentions clear from the onset as they ran rampant and by the 22nd minute had already scored their fourth and bonus point try.

The seven try rout started as early as the 4th minute when All Black centre Ma’a Nonu slipped through Bulls flyhalf Derick Hougaard’s tackle and cantered over the line for Jimmy Gopperth to convert.

Four minutes later the Bulls struck back with a penalty but that was their last show of intent for at least 20 minutes as the Hurricanes dominated all the facets of play.

After countless phases flanker Chris Masoe crashed over a pile of bodies to increase the visitors lead to 14-3 in the 10th minute.

It was from another break by Nonu in the 17th minute that saw Hurricanes centre Conrad Smith outsprint the retreating Bulls defenders to score his team’s third try.

Five minutes later Nonu was the recipient of a careless intercept pass from Bulls Springbok lock Bakkies Botha leaving the bulky centre to sprint to the run for his second try and the Hurricanes onus point try.

In the latter stages of the first half, the Bulls tried to fight back and the pressure they applied on the Hurricanes eventually yielded results with Smith being yellow carded for a deliberate knock on in the 23rd minute and Jerry Collins also being sent to the sidelines for 10 minutes for a professional foul.

It was with a two men advantage that the defending Super 14 champions were finally able to breach the Hurricanes defence when Pierre Spies picked up from the base of the scrum and scored.

In the second half it was the Hurricanes again who showed intent, starting cautiously with a penalty by Gopperth before replacement hooker Hikawera Elliot scored in the 62nd minute with the Bulls man down after Wynand Olivier was yellow carded for a high tackle on Smith. The flood gates opened and the Hurricanes added two more tries through Shannon Paku in the 65th minute and Cory Jane in the 69th minute to register the Hurricanes 50 points on the scoreboard.

There was a late surge from the Bulls after coach Frans Ludeke had introduced the remainder of his substitutes with Wikus van Heerden crashing over from a maul and prop Jaco Engels showing good speed in chasing down a grubber kick to score in the 77th minute.
