Hurricanes beat Blues in Wellington

The second Super rugby match on Saturday is in Wellington where the Hurricanes host the Blues from Auckland.

The Hurricanes have played the Blues 29 times in Super rugby since 1996 and the Hurricanes have won 14 matches, lost 14 and drawn one.

  • The Hurricanes have won their last six games on the bounce against the Blues, a streak twice as long as any other they have managed against the Auckland club.
  • The Hurricanes have now lost three games on the bounce; the last time they went longer without a win was an eight-game drought (L8) across the 2013 and 2014 campaigns.

3.00: The Blues start strongly and go through the phases gradually working the ball to the Hurricanes line. 16 phases.

4.00: The Hurricanes turn the ball over and kick it upfield. The Blues get the ball back and start to build again. The Hurricanes knock on.

6.00: Penalty to the Blues. Stephen Perofeta takes the kick and nails it. The Blues lead.

8.00: The Hurricanes win a line out on their 5m line. They kick for touch and find it but make little ground.

11.00: The Hurricanes win a scrum just outside the Blues 22.  Ngani Laumape busts through the Blues defensive line and offloads to Julian Savea who scores – TRY!

13.00: J.Barrett slots the conversion and the Hurricanes lead.

16.00; The Hurricanes attack down the wing but the Blues intercept and kick ahead. The Hurricanes get back, secure the ball but concede a penalty.

17.00: Perofeta kicks for touch but it goes wrong as it goes out behind the line so there will be a scrum.

20.00: The Hurricanes get the ball and attack from their 22. Jordie Barrett gets them to the half way line. The Blues turn the ball over and make ground but then don’t release so they concede a penalty.

22.00: The Hurricanes win a line out and Milner-Skudder offloads to Ngani Laumape who wrongfoots the Blues and slips over next to the posts. TRY!

23.00: J.Barrett adds the conversion.

29.00: Penalty to the Hurricanes. Barrett kicks for touch and sets up a line out inside the Blues 22.

30.00: The Hurricanes win the line out and when they cant get through the ball is chipped ahead. The Blues get to the ball but knock on.

32.00: The Hurricanes win the scrum and start going through the phases on the 5m line. Again and again they attack the line. Laumape goes over but the ball is held up.

35.00: The Hurricanes win the scrum and this time Laumape gets the ball at pace and crashes through three tackles and scores. TRY! 

36.00: Jordie Barrett adds the conversion.

37.00: The Blues get the ball after the restart and on the Hurricanes 22 Rieko Ioane gets the ball and takes off for the corner beating Jordie Barrett with his pace and scores. TRY!

38.00: Perofeta adds the conversion.

40.00; The siren sounds for half time as Perofeta makes a break. His pass goes to ground and the Hurricanes boot the ball into touch to end the half.

The Hurricanes kick off and the second half is underway.

44.00: The Blues get the ball on attack in the Hurricanes half but Perofeta chips the ball ahead. The Canes get back and put in out into touch.

45.00: The Blues win the line out and go through the phases on attack on the 5m line.

46.00: The Blues get over but cant get the ball down so they go wide and Rieko Ioane scores. TRY! 

47.00: Perofeta adds the conversion.

49.00: From the kick off the Blues try to clear the ball but it is charged down. The Hurricanes chase the ball but the Blues just get back and dot the ball down forcing a 5m scrum.

52.00: The Hurricanes put the Blues under pressure in their 22. The ball goes dead so there will be another scrum. The Hurricanes have been camped in the Blues 22 for the last six minutes.

53.00: The Hurricanes win the scrum and Beauden Barrett goes for the line and scores in the tackle. TRY! The TMO confirms the grounding of the ball.

54.00: J.Barrett takes the conversion kick from outwide and nails it in front of the 11000 strong crowd.

56.00: The Blues almost hit back straight away but the ball is lost forward in front of the try line.

58.00: The Blues get caught offside at the ruck so they concede a penalty. The Hurricanes kick for touch.

64.00: The Blues gradually go through the phases working the ball to the line. They go over the line and the TRY is awarded. Akira Ioane is awarded the try.

Perofeta adds the conversion.

68.00: The Hurricanes get the ball to the Blues 5m line from a line out. Ngani Laumape goes over the line and drops to the ground score his hat trick TRY! ilner-Skudder has gone off – possible hamstring injury.

69.00: The try is converted by Barrett.

71.00: Amazing. From a line out the Blues pass the ball back but it gets intercepted by Beauden Barrett who offloads behind his back to Ngani Laumape – yes Laumape again and he races for the line and score his FOURTH TRY!

72.00: Jordie Barrett adds the conversion.

75.00: The Hurricanes are playing the game just inside the Blues half.

78.00: The Hurricanes go through the motions winding down the clock but the Blues knock on giving the Canes a scrum in the Blues half.

79.00: The Hurricanes win the scrum, they kick wide for Savea but he loses the ball as he goes over to score.

80.00: The siren sounds. The Blues win the scrum and run the ball. They lose it and tackle dangerously so the Hurricanes get a penalty and kick the ball out into touch.
