Hurricanes beat Cheetahs in Wellington




Current Super Rugby champions the Hurricanes are back at home in Wellington this week and they host South Africa’s Cheetahs.

The Cheetahs are South Africa’s lowest ranked team this season and after 11 matches they have only two wins to their name. Every other SA team has won more matches and has more points.

We are waiting for the kick off.

The Cheetahs kick off and we are underway.

1.00: The Hurricanes run the ball but knock on. The first scrum collapses.

3.00:The Hurricanes win the ball back after the scrum and run it for a couple of phases and then chip it into touch.

4.00: The Cheetahs win the line out and clear the ball into touch.

6.00: The Cheetahs show some endeavour with the ball but their handling lets them down and the ball goes into touch. The Hurricanes win a line out and pass the ball down the line – forward.

10.00: Ball handling letting both teams down and another ball is lost.

11.00: The Hurricanes win their scrum and run the ball into the Cheetahs 22. The Hurricanes keep the ball moving through 6 phases but make little ground and are tackled into touch.

13.00: Fred Zeilinga fools the Canes with a dummy but then passes to Ardie Savea. The Hurricanes get the ball into the Cheetahs 22 but the ball is turned over and the Cheetahs boot it into touch.

14.00: Penalty to the Hurricanes in front for hands (boot) in the ruck. The Hurricanes choose a scrum.

16.00: The Hurricanes win the scrum and attack. Otere Black chips the ball through but the Cheetahs get back to save it. The 22 drop is a mess but the Cheetahs get the ball back but then they pass the ball Vaea Fifita gets the ball and runs in to score the first TRY!

17.00: Beauden Barrett slots the conversion.

19.00; The Hurricanes  take a quick line out, Ben May starts the attack and the Hurricanes get the ball away down the line and Ngani Laumape sets up Vince Aso who shoves off a tackler and scores. TRY!

20.00: Barrett add the conversion.

22.00: Cheetahs captain Francois Venter has to leave the field due to injury. The captaincy is assumed by Oupa Mohoje.

23.00: Penalty to the Cheetahs as Zeilinga is tackled late. The Cheetahs take the line out. The Cheetahs win another penalty and take the line out again.

24.00: The Cheetahs win the line out and attack in front of the posts, Zeilinga dummies again and steps to the left, ducks under a Perenara tackle and scores. TRY!

25.00: Zeilinga converts his try and breaks the 100 point mark for this season.

29.00: The Hurricanes go through 6 phases and win a penalty. They kick for touch and set up the line out.

32.00: The Hurricanes win a scrum near the 5m line but lose ground as they pass the ball back and they get driven out of the 22. The Cheetahs win a penalty and clear the ball into touch.

34.00: The Hurricanes win a penalty as the Cheetahs throw the ball away intentionally which is a foul.

36.00: The Hurricanes win the line out from the penalty and work the ball through 11 phases but cant get into the Cheetahs 22. They chip ahead and the ball goes into touch. The Hurricanes had the advantage so they have a penalty.

38.00: The Hurricanes take the line out option, the maul makes some ground, Ricky Riccitelli gets the Hurricanes closer but is caught. The forwards drive forward and Ardie Savea scores. TRY!

39.00: Barrett takes the conversion kick and nails it as the siren sounds.

The Hurricanes kick off and the second half is underway.

43.00: the Hurricanes work the ball to the Cheetahs tryline. Ben May is driven over but the ball looks to be held up. Elandré Huggett is yellow carded. The Hurricanes take the line out.

44.00: The Hurricanes work the ball from the line out to the line. Ardie Savea has a go but the ball is recycled and Ardie Savea scores. The try is awarded but before the conversion is taken the officials have another look. The try is confirmed.

45.00: Barrett takes the conversion kick and nails it.

46.00: From the restart the Hurricanes get the ball to Ngani Laumape who breaks from his 22 and offloads to Vince Aso who pulls away from the Cheetahs and scores his second TRY!

47.00: Barrett nails the conversion and overtakes Andrew Mehrtens in the all time Super rugby points scoring table to third place.

50.00: Jordie Barett comes on for Beauden Barrett.

55.00: The Hurricanes go through 5 phases working the ball to the Cheetahs tryline. They get to the line but they are held up/short.

56.00: The Hurricanes drive for the line again and this time they get over and score. A fight breaks out but Jeff To’omaga-Allen has scored. TRY!

57.00: Black adds the conversion.

61.00: Wow. The Hurricanes slip off a tackle after a scrum, Laumape chips ahead and Vince Aso races away and gets the ball to score his hat trick TRY!

63.00: Black adds the conversion.

67.00: The Cheetahs kick the ball to the corner. The Hurricanes get to the ball first and counter attack. Ben Lam gets the ball and races away to score. TRY!

Black adds the conversion.

73.00: The ball is lost at the line out by the Cheetahs. It’s picked up by Leni Apisai who dives over and scores. The TMO will check. The try is awarded.

74.00: Black takes the conversion from out wide. He just misses.

78.00: The Cheetahs win their scrum near the half way line and get a penalty advantage. They will take the line out.

79.00: Another penalty to the Cheetahs. Zeilinga sets up a line out again. The siren sounds. We have time for the line out. Another penalty.

80.00: The Cheetahs take the line out. They win the line out and drive for the line and go over but are held up.

That’s it – the Hurricanes have won.
