The Hurricanes have played the Crusaders 36 times in Super Rugby since 1996, and the Hurricanes have won 12 matches, drawn three games and lost 21 times.

Those 12 Super Rugby victories give the Hurricanes a record of winning 33% of their matches against the Crusaders regardless of the venue.

  • The Crusaders have won their last three Super Rugby games against the Hurricanes; the previous time either side won more successive iterations of this fixture was a seven-game stretch for the Saders from 2005 to 2008 (Hurricanes W3 2014-2015).
  • The Hurricanes have won five Super Rugby games on the bounce at home against the Crusaders, despite leading at half-time only three times in that period.
  • The Crusaders are undefeated in their last 10 New Zealand derbies in Super Rugby (W9, D1), their last defeat in such a fixture coming in Round 5, 2018 against the Highlanders.
  • The Canes have beaten 30 defenders per game in Super Rugby 2019, more than any other club in the competition.
  • The Christchurch franchise has made 14 clean breaks per game this Super Rugby season, the most of any team.
  • Ben Lam has scored five tries in five Super Rugby games against the Crusaders, including three in his last two and one when he was playing for the Blues.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kickoff.

In the meantime why not have a look at the match preview.

.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in New Zealand for this top of the table clash. Ricky Riccitelli and Vaea Fifita both run out for their 50th Super Rugby caps for the Hurricanes.

.00: It’s a good start by the Crusaders, slowly going through the phases as they attack inside the Canes’ 22. The home team turn the ball over and counter-attack before they give away a penalty at the ruck.

.00: Another sustained period of pressure from the Crusaders ends with them giving away a penalty for offsides. Beauden Barrett kicks to touch.

.00: Another penalty against the visitors, this time for not rolling away. Jordy Barrett will take a long-range kick.

.00: PENALTY! Barrett sneaks his kick inside the right-hand post. 3-0

.00: Both teams are using the ball well, going through multiple phases using big ball carriers and building pressure.

.00: Matt Proctor’s long pass to Jordie Barrett is forward, ending an 11-phase attack.

.00: BIG SCRUM! The visitors win a scrum-penalty allowing them to clear their lines.

.00: Richie Mo’unga’s pass is lost forward. Scrum to the hosts inside their half. Both teams have made two handling errors apiece.

.00: Another knock on, this time it’s a scrum to the Crusaders.

.00: TRY! Will Jordan, in for George Bridge, chases Bryn Hall’s kick. Ben Lam gets to the bouncing ball before Jordan but he loses the pill backwards allowing the winger to gather the loose ball and score. 3-5

.00: CONVERSION! Mo’unga slots the sideline conversion. 3-7

.00: BIG SCRUM! The Hurricanes win a scrum-penalty, this time. Beauden Barrett kicks to the corner.

.00: Chase Tiatia is pinged for going off his feet, killing the Canes’ momentum. Mo’unga kicks to the 22.

.00: Some wonderful work by the Hurricanes sees them win a turnover after holding up Scott Barrett.

.00: TRY! Against the run of play. Tiatia gets himself in a mess, dropping a high ball which David Havili snaps up. The fullback races away to score. 3-12

.00: CONVERSION! Mo’unga adds the extras. 3-14

.00: The hosts build through the phases into the Crusaders’ 22.

.00: BIG DEFENCE! John Plumtree will be pulling what little hair he has, out. His team go 11-phases before knocking on near the goal line.

.00: A couple of reset scrums as the teams get their breaths, back.

.00: MASSIVE SCRUM! YELLOW CARD! The Hurricanes redeem themselves winning a huge scrum-penalty. Brad Weber tries to go quickly but Matt Todd interferes, killing the attack. He is duly sent to the sin-bin.

.00: TRY! Ngani Laumape barges his way over from close range after a Hurricanes’ lineout. 8-14

.00: MISS! Barrett misses an easy conversion. 8-14

.00: The Hurricanes give away a penalty after the restart. Mo’unga calls for the tee.

.00: PENALTY! Mo’unga makes no mistake, extending his side’s lead to nine. 8-17

.00: Laumape is held up by Ryan Crotty and Mo’unga, winning a vital turnover just before halftime. The Saders are very dangerous from this position (a centre-field scrum).

.00: Harry Allan is penalised for a high-tackle and gives the home team the last chance at getting some points as Barrett kicks to touch inside the Crusaders’ half.

.00: Nothing comes from the lineout. Michael Alaalatoa kicks the ball out.

The halftime score was Hurricanes 8 Crusaders 17

.00: PEEEEP! Beauden Barrett kicks off the second half at the Cake Tin, Wellington.

.00: Mo’unga cleans up Beauden Barrett’s grubber; it’ll be a 22 drop-out as Todd returns to play. The flanker’s indiscretion only cost his team two points.

.00: The Crusaders are camped inside the Hurricanes’ 22 after an intercept from Whetukamokamo Douglas, who was chased down by Beauden Barrett.

.00: TRY! Havili has a second score, darting inside Lam for the five-pointer. 8-22

.00: CONVERSION! Mo’unga adds the two. 8-24

.00: Jeff To’omaga-Allen is pinged for offsides. Mo’unga clears. Another good chance goes begging for the hosts.

.00: TRY! Wonderful try and inter-linking play between the Crusaders’ forwards and backs. Crotty made a little break before Douglas’ pass set up Braydon Ennor’s score in the corner. 8-29

.00: MISS! Mo’unga can’t add the extras. 8-29

.00: There’s a break in play; Plumtree’s men need to regroup and get some points on the board or this will be a rout.

.00: The Hurricanes have an attacking scrum near the touchline; they must score.

.00: TJ Perenara takes a quick-tap penalty but he is called back by referee Ben O’Keeffe. Beauden Barrett was flattened by Sevu Reece but the penalty came from a different infringement. The Canes opt for a scrum from centre-field.

.00: Perenara goes close but after another couple of phases Jordan is caught offsides. The Canes go quickly.

.00: The Canes knock on, killing another good opportunity. Mitch Drummond slows play down and Havili clears. The Crusaders win a penalty from a lineout and Mo’unga kicks into the home team’s half.

.00: NO TRY! Havili goes over in the corner, however, Scott Barrett’s pass was forward and the try is ruled out. That would have put the game to bed.

.00: The Hurricanes have made 12 handling errors to five and conceded 15 turnovers to 10. You cannot beat the eight-time champions with that many mistakes.

.00: Scott Robertson’s team is in complete control, they have all the territory and possession and are squeezing the life from their opponents.

.00: The Crusaders win another penalty and Mo’unga calls for the tee.

.00: PENALTY! Mo’unga slots the kick and brings up 500 Super Rugby points in the process. 8-32

.00: The Canes are scoreless since the break, giving away 20 turnovers and making 15 handling mistakes.

.00: Some errors creeping into the Crusaders’ game. A poor kick allows the Canes some respite before the end.

.00: Both teams trudge back for a scrum inside the visitor’s half. The hooter sounds.

.00: Another turnover allows the Crusaders to clear behind their goal line and end the game, keeping them on top of the Super Rugby log and extending their winning streak to four against the Hurricanes.
