Hurricanes beat Highlanders in Wellington

on

The Hurricanes and the Highlanders have played each other 36 times in Super Rugby, the Canes have won 21 games, and lost 15 times.

The Canes have a good home record against the Landers, winning 12 of 18 Super Rugby matches in the Waikato.

  • The Hurricanes have won seven of their last nine Super Rugby games against the Highlanders (L2), including a 30-19 win when they met last in Round 5 of the 2021 Super Rugby Aotearoa campaign.
  • The Hurricanes have lost seven of their last eight Super Rugby games (W1); a win in this match would make it their second victory in the 2021 Super Rugby Aotearoa season – still their fewest ever in a single Super Rugby campaign.
  • The Highlanders have won three of their last five away games in Super Rugby (L2), more than they had won in their 13 away games prior (W2, L11).
  • The Highlanders have had an average of 15 minutes and 52 seconds of time in possession this Super Rugby Aotearoa season, the most of any team and more than a minute and a half more than the last-ranked Hurricanes (14m 21s).
  • Josh Ioane (Highlanders) has scored a try in each of his last two Super Rugby games after having scored just one try across his 16 previous games.

4.00: Highlanders win a kickable penalty after Tyrel Lomax is pinged for collapsing the scrum.

5.00: PENALTY! Mitch Hunt opens the scoring. 0-3

7.00: Jona Nareki cleans up a Canes’ kick, he plays Gregory, who boots the ball away, but the hosts counter-attack after Dane Coles’ turnover at the ruck.

8.00: TRY! Devan Flanders finishes off a sublime counter-attack from inside the Hurricanes’ half. Coles made the turnover after a poor kick-chase by the Highlanders. The hosts sent the ball wide where some good interplay between backs and forwards was finished by the number eight. 5-3

9.00: CONVERSION! Jordie Barrett converts. 7-3

11.00: Barrett kicks a 22 drop-out deep, the Landers kick the ball away allowing the Hurricanes to set up a counter-attack down the right-hand side touchline.

13.00: A 13-phase attack produces two penalty advantages to the home team. Coles decides to kick to the corner.

15.00: Luke Campbell’s grubber is claimed by the Highlanders, who consolidate before clearing deep into the opposition’s half. The visitors win a penalty, but Aaron Smith goes quickly but the Canes win the turnover to set up another counter-attack.

16.00: The Highlanders are under the pump; their kick-chase is rubbish, their tackling is poor, and it looks like a matter of time before the Canes score again. TMO checking for foul play.

16.00: YELLOW CARDS! Mitch Hunt and Dane Coles are off for foul play; Hunt also made an initial high tackle, while Coles elbowed the flyhalf before Hunt shoved the hooker in the face. 7-3

18.00: Josh Dixon crashes over from a pick-and-drive after a 10-phase attack. 7-8

19.00: CONVERSION! Sam Gilbert, taking over from Hunt, converts. 7-10

22.00: The scrums are still a mess, the referee, however, is favouring the Landers’ pack, pinging Lomax twice for collapsing.

24.00: Both teams going to the boot for territory, but the visitor’s kicking has been poor, and their first-time tackling is an issue at the moment.

26.00: The Hurricanes conceded a penalty for collapsing their own scrum. The Landers kick to the corner and will want to score some points as both teams go back to a full quota of players.

27.00: James Blackwell strays offside at the ruck, Hunt goes to the corner again.

28.00: TRY! Jona Nareki goes in untouched after a slick move by the backs. The Highlanders went to their maul, but Ash Dixon broke away near the line. Aaron Smith got quick-ball and sent it wide to Scott Gregory, who sent Nareki away. 7-15

30.00: CONVERSION! Hunt adds the extras. 7-17

33.00: Kazuki Himeno gives away a needless penalty by not listening to the referee, it does give the visitors a reprieve after a long time defending their line. The Canes opt for a scrum under the posts.

35.00: Ayden Johnstone collapses, Canes want another scrum.

36.00: Oh, dear! Ruben Love drifts across the field but spills the ball into touch when a try seemed easier to score.

37.00: CAPTAIN’S REFERRAL! Dane Coles is held in a ruck and looks to have accidentally stood on an opposition’s player.

37.00: The referral backfires against the Landers because Billy Harmon is pinged for foul play.

38.00: TRY! The Hurricanes go to the driving maul, Coles breaks off the back of the maul, and charges through Aaron Smith and Hunt. 12-17

39.00: MISS! Barrett’s kick is well wide. 12-17

41.00: The Highlanders are a mess, a poor clearance kick gives the Canes an attacking lineout. Nothing came of the attack, but offside against the Landers gives Barrett a shot at goal.

42.00: PENALTY! Barrett makes no mistake before the break. 15-17

The halftime score was Hurricanes 15 Highlanders 17

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in Wellington, New Zealand.

42.00: TRY! Ngani Laumape beats Aaron Smith to Jordie Barrett’s weighted grubber kick to put the Hurricanes back in front. 20-17

46.00: NO TRY! Sam Gilbert’s try is chalked off for a knock-on by Bryn Evans in the build-up after a good ‘Captain’s Referral’ by Dane Coles. 15-17

50.00: The game has become scrappy again. Both teams begin to empty their benches.

52.00: TRY! Du’Plessis Kirifi extends his team’s lead after a sublime linebreak by Ruben Love. The first-five danced through the Highlanders before offloading to Kirifi, who raced away to score. 27-17

60.00: MISS! Hunt cannot cut the gap to five. 29-22

64.00: Not much in the way of action, but I expect the game to open at the death as the gaps open.

68.00; It’s still very messy as the rain comes down.

70.00: TRY! That must be the game. Laumape’s linebreak opened up the Landers, and the centre raced from his half to the 22 before sending away Brayden Lose for his second score of the season. 34-22

72.00: MISS! The kick is no good. 34-22

75.00: a mistake by Nareki kills a promising attacking chance for Brown’s forlorn team.
