Hurricanes beat Reds in Wellington

The Hurricanes kick off the fourteenth round in Super Rugby this year and they will be looking for their fifth straight victory over the Reds.

If the Hurricanes win this weekend, they will also stretch their unbeaten streak to ten matches without a loss in 2018.

  • The Hurricanes have won 13 of their last 15 games against the Reds, including their last four on the bounce.
  • The Canes have won their last nine consecutive games at home against the Reds, despite trailing at half-time in two of their last four such fixtures.
  • The Hurricanes have won 19 of their last 20 games on home soil, including their last seven on the bounce.
  • The last time the Wellington team lost to an Australian team at home was in Round 10, 2015.
  • The Reds have finished their last two games without losing a scrum, as many times as they had in their 11 games prior.
  • Jordie Barrett has made 19 offloads this campaign, the second most of any back – he’s made nine in his last two starts.

We are waiting for the kick-off.

Match detail

.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in Wellington.

.00: The Reds win an early penalty and will take a shot at goal.

.00: PENALTY! Jono Lance makes no mistake from in front. 0-3

.00: Duncan Paia’aua has his kick charged down by Beauden Barrett. Lance clears but is tackled in the in-goal area. Scrum to the Hurricanes near the posts.

.00: Peter Umaga-Jensen is held-up over the in-goal area; another 5m scrum, but this time, on the left of the posts for the Kiwis.

.00: TRY! Easy as you like. It’s the same move as before, but this time Beauden Barrett holds on after taking TJ Perenara’s pass and crashes over for his 30th Super Rugby try. 5-3

.00: CONVERSION! Barrett converts his own try. 7-3

.00: Taniela Tupou wins a penalty on the Hurricanes 22 after Jeff Toomaga-Allen is caught for not releasing. Lance calls for the tee.

.00: PENALTY! Lance cuts the deficit to one. 7-6

.00: Toomaga-Allen puts Sam Lousi away through a huge hole and the Canes are camped inside the Reds 22.

.00: TRY! Ben Lam is over in the corner for his 13th try of the season. The Hurricanes went 15 phases inside the Queensland 22. The visitors could not keep out their hosts, whose patience is expert. 12-6

.00: CONVERSION! Barrett slots another. 14-6

.00: Some good work by the Reds, using their powerful runners to get over the gain-line.

.00: Toby Smith is caught offsides, and the Reds opt for another scrum, which is reset.

.00: TRY! George Smith breaks off the collapsed scrum but is tackled short. Smith goes close but is stopped before Tupou carries three defenders over the whitewash with him. 14-11

.00: CONVERSION! Lance adds the extras. 14-13

.00: Hamish Stewart saves the day with a try-saving tackle on Lam. The winger only had to dot the ball down or slide over the goal-line. However, the winger is too cute with the finish and he loses the try-scoring opportunity.

.00: TRY! Filipo Daugunu races away from Perenara and Lam and is over under the posts after Samu Kerevi’s break from midfield. It came from first-phase off a halfway line lineout after Lam had knocked on over the try-line. 14-18

.00: CONVERSION! Lance hits his fourth kick of the evening. 14-20

.00: The Reds have managed to hang in this game. They look dangerous when in possession, but flakey on defence, which has shades of last week’s humiliating thrashing at the hands of the Sunwolves in Tokyo.

.00: Scrum to the Reds. Vaea Fifita is off with an injury. On comes Murray Douglas.

.00: Lam breaks again, but loses the ball forward. Yet another scrum for the visitors.

.00: TRY! Blade Thomson spins out of Ben Lucas’ tackle and is in for the score. The Hurricanes went left and right, offloading and sucking in defenders before Jordie Barrett combined with Nehe Milner-Skudder, who put the No 8 away. 19-20

.00: CONVERSION! Barrett puts his side back in front. 21-20

.00: The Hurricanes have a lineout on the Reds 10m but they lose the throw. Lance’s up-and-under is short, gathered by Lam, and now the Canes have possession near the Queensland 22.

.00: Kane Douglas is caught offsides at the breakdown. Perenara points to the posts.

.00: PENALTY! Barrett, from straight in front, adds another three. 24-20

The halftime score was Hurricanes 24 Reds 20

.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in New Zealand.

.00: Beauden Barrett throws a weird forward pass. It looked to have swerved out of his hands. Scrum to the Reds on halfway.

.00: Umaga-Jensen wins the turnover and counter-attacks. The ball is sent wide to Jordie Barrett, who puts in a perfectly weighted grubber which Daugunu carries over his in-goal area.

.00: Some good defending by the Reds. Milner-Skudder and Perenara went close, but after nine phases, the Reds are caught offsides. The Canes want to scrum.

.00: Superb defending from the Queenslanders. Matt Proctor looks to have scored but Jordan Petaia makes the first tackle and Izack Rodda helps him hold the centre up.

.00: TRY! Lam stands Daugunu up and goes around the winger. Lam used two hands to dot down this time for try number 14 of the year. 29-20

.00: CONVERSION! Barrett adds the sideline conversion. 31-20

.00: TRY! Sensational from run from Tupou. The prop took the ball at halfway, handed off Milner-Skudder, beat Perenara’s cover tackle and drew Jordie Barrett before putting Petaia away. Stunning! 31-25

.00: CONVERSION! Lance keeps his team in the hunt. 31-27

.00: Somehow, the Reds are sticking in range of the Canes and not letting their hosts have it all their own way in Wellington.

.00: Jordie Barrett goes close again. George Smith is penalised for a high tackle and the Hurricanes kick to the corner.

.00: Umaga-Jensen is pinged for a deliberate knock-on after trying to intercept Daugunu’s pass. The TMO replay shows that the centre is held back by the winger and so the Hurricanes get a scrum. All’s well that ends well.

.00: Ardie Savea busts through several tackles and enters the Reds 22. The visitors win the turnover, but Lance’s clearance-kick is a shocker, shanking the ball into touch 15 metres from his goal line.

.00: The Reds have had two opportunities to exit, but they keep turning the ball over. The Canes have had 74 percent territory and 63 percent possession.

.00: Ben O’Keeffe loses his patience with the Reds’ front row and penalises them for early engagement. Barrett kicks to the corner.

.00: TRY! Lousi takes Chris Eves’ short pass and ghosts through the Reds’ defence to score his second try in two weeks. The Hurricanes went 12 phases, wearing the opposition down before striking the killer blow. 36-27

.00: CONVERSION! Barrett adds another two. 38-27

.00: Terrible kick from Lance. The Canes have the scrum on their own 10m.

.00: TRY! Kerevi finishes off a wonderful series of plays to score near the poles. The Reds went 15 phases, pushing and pulling the Hurricanes around the pitch before striking. 38-32.

.00: CONVERSION! Lance reduces the gap. 38-34

.00: Reds waste another chance and give the ball away.

.00: Time is running out for the visitors.

.00: Perenara controls the maul, calls for the ball and kicks it into touch.
