Brumbies beat Jaguares in Buenos Aires

Argentina’s Jaguares are at home in Buenos Aires again this weekend and they host Australian Conference leaders the Brumbies.

The Jaguares had a bye last weekend, but in the match before the bye, they lost to the Force at home.

That will have given them a wake-up call and the bye gave them time to work on their systems.

These two teams have not met before. The Brumbies have won four games this season, yet sit top of the Aussie Conference, and will do so even if they lose.

The Argentinians have lost five of their six games and are all but out of the running for a wild card.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

1.00: BEEP! BEEP! We are underway in Buenos Aires. Referee Mike Fraser has to swap the two teams around as they have both lined up on the wrong side.

2.00: The Jaguares have started with some great runs and offloads. They pile into the breakdowns and are going wide at every opportunity. Eventually, after some sustained pressure, they are awarded the penalty by Mike Fraser.

3.00: PENALTY! Nicolas Sanchez gets his team on the scoreboard with a penalty in front of the posts.

6.00: The Brumbies have some good possession but are kicking away too much. An aerial battle ensues. The Australians keep the ball and are punching their way up field with their forwards.

8.00: It’s all very lateral from the Brumbies; they go 10 phases but go nowhere. Joe Powell is getting some good quick, clean ball, but the Brumbies are kicking the ball away. Joaquin Tuculet collects and clears to touch.

10.00: Leonardo Senatore is penalised for not rolling away. Wharenui Hawera kicks to touch and they will have the lineout inside the Jaguares half. They go to their driving maul and march up the field.

12.00: The Brumbies win another penalty, kick to touch and drive. They are stopped but win another for offsides. Hawera kicks to the 5. Next infringement will be a yellow card.

13.00: TRY Sam Carter! The Brumbies are over the line. They moved the maul left, then peeled right, before powering over the whitewash. Mike Fraser has gone to TMO Santiago Borsani.

14.00: Hawera adds the extras.

16.00: Tevita Kuridrani makes a break from his 22 and goes all the way to the Jaguares 10. Hawera puts boot to ball and the move breaks down. The Jaguares wins a penalty and tap-and-go.

19.00: TRY Tomas Lavanini! Joaquin Tuculet goes close before the lock crashes over. Tom Banks’ poor footwork did not help his team. Jeronimo De La Fuente collected the loose ball and the Jags set up quick ball. The Jaguares went 90 metres down the field and score.

20.00: Sanchez adds the conversion from just to the left of the posts.

24.00: Ben Alexander breaks and gets his offload to Joe Powell. The scrumhalf sees Aidan Toua on his inside. The winger hands off Joaquin Tuculet, but is stopped by the cover defence. Tuculet knocks on and the Brumbies have the attacking scrum inside their opponent’s 22. Scrum is reset.

25.00: TRY Tom Banks! Powell breaks to the right, passes to the fullback on the loop, and behind Tevita Kuridrani. Banks speeds away once he is through the gap. Jeronimo De La Fuente could not get to the flying fullback.

26.00: The conversion is wide, but the Brumbies have the lead – again.

29.00: TRY Tom Banks! The fullback collects Chris Alcock’s kick and dives over in the corner. The fullback manages to stay on the field of play and dot down near the corner flag. Great try. It all came from Bautista Ezcurra’s knock on, and the flanker’s innovation.

30.00: Hawera misses from out wide.

33.00: The Brumbies win a penalty inside the Jaguares’ 22. Tevita Kuridrani almost intercepts a loose pass before the penalty. The Aussies will opt for a centre-field scrum, under the sticks. The scrum is reset, again.

37.00: The Brumbies win another penalty. Hawera kicks to the 5.

38.00: The Brumbies botch the driving maul and the home team can clear. The Aussies gave up six points and came away with nothing.

39.00: Maybe they should have kicked and had a 10-point lead at the break. Agustin Creevy makes a break and is hit by Josh Mann-Rea and Sam Carter. The skipper did not wrap his arms around the hooker and is penalised.

40.00: STOLEN! Jordan Smiler steals the lineout and the Australians set up a counter-attack. The hooter goes. Creevy comes in from the side.

41.00: YELLOW CARD! Creevy is sent to the bin for cynical play and coming from the side.

42.00: PENALTY! Hawera extends the tourist’s lead to 10 at the break.

The half-time score was Jaguares 10 Brumbies 20

41.00: BEEP! BEEP! We are back underway in Argentina. The Brumbies made only ONE handling error and have their biggest half-time lead in Super Rugby this season. However, they have lost four of the five games that they have led at the break.

44.00: The Brumbies steal another lineout and attack through Tom Banks. Aidan Toua makes a break but Kyle Godwin puts boot to ball and loses attacking momentum.

49.00: The tourists have had the better of the possession, but are pinged for another infringement, this time from Henry Speight.

54.00: The Jaguares get some possession and turn it over immediately. They lose the ball forward after winning it back, so the Aussies will get the scrum feed.

56.00: TRY Henry Speight! The Brumbies send the ball through the hands and the wing scores in the corner, untouched.

57.00: The conversion is missed after Hawera attempted a quick drop-kick.

61.00: Another knock on kills a Jaguares counter-attack. The home team has less than 20 minutes to conjure up some magic; and three scores.

67.00: Tom Banks is hit late and Hawera kicks to touch. The Jags’ ill-discipline has resurfaced tonight and it is costing them dearly.

68.00: Another penalty sees the Aussies get excellent field position and look to land the killer blow.

69.00: TRY Andy Muirhead! The substitute dives on Hawera’s grubber-kick to end the game as a contest.

71.00: Hawera adds the conversion.

73.00: TRY Andy Muirhead gets his second! He bounces through the tackles and reaches out to score near the polls.

74.00: Hawera can’t miss from there. That is well and truly, the ball game.

77.00: The Jaguares have the ball and the penalty inside the Brumbies’ 22.

78.00: TRY Guido Petti Pagadizaval,! It’s a consolation for the hosts as the big man dots down after a driving maul.

79.00: Sanchez can’t add the extras.

80.00: The hooter sounds and the Australians have a superb victory.
