England head coach Eddie Jones says that his team did not play well in the first Test and that they can “improve significantly” for next week’s second test.

England beat Australia in Brisbane for the first time as they fought back from 10-0 down to seal a 39-28 victory over Australia in the first match of a three-Test series.

However, Jones feels there is more to come from his England side who scored three tries in the victory.

“We didn’t play well, I’m happy with the result but we didn’t play well,” said Jones.

“We can improve significantly in our ball carrying and second man work. We can improve significantly in terms of our defence spacing and we can improve significantly in putting more set-piece pressure on Australia.”

England now travel to Melbourne for the second Test and Jones has urged his side to start the game quicker.

“There is a lot of expectation on this Wallaby side so the pressure will be on them”

“We struggled in the first 10 minutes of the game, Australia put a lot of pace on the ball which we don’t encounter in games in England,” he said.

“It took us a while to get up to the pace of the game.

“We played 40 minutes of good rugby, but gave the Wallabies some easy tries and we’ll need to do some work on our defence. We made history today but that’s not good enough for us, it’s all about next week.”

Jones described the performance of flanker James Haskell as “outstanding” and hailed captain Dylan Hartley as “inspirational” and says the pressure will all be on Australia going into next weekend’s game.

“There is a lot of expectation on this Wallaby side so the pressure will be on them next week,” he said.

“They have athletic ability and a guy like Israel Folau is a special player and they kept him in the game. He’s a top quality player and we need to be better defensively, we gave him too much space.”

Jones added: “The reality is it gives us one more game. We’ve come here to win the series. We showed real grit, and we had a specific plan.”
