Joseph : Lions have the total game

Highlanders head coach Jamie Joseph is expecting a tough Super Rugby Semi-final battle this weekend against a side he says has the “total game.”

The Highlanders have made their way to South Africa for the second time in a month as they face the Lions in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The Highlanders were in South Africa three weeks ago when they faced the Southern Kings before they jetted off to Argentina to play the Jaguares.

The Highlanders then returned to New Zealand before flying out to Australia for Saturday’s quarter-final match against the Brumbies.

The amount of travel the Highlanders have done over the last month is as much as many will do in their life times and this week they will also have to contend with the altitude as the match is in Johannesburg.

In addition to the travel and altitude Joseph’s Highlanders will also have to face a Super Rugby side with what the coach calls the “total game”.

“They beat the Chiefs on tour (36-32 in round two) and once they got back to South Africa they’ve gone from strength to strength,” Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph told the NZHerald.

“Unlike the other South African teams, they play a running game of football, they can maul, they can scrum.”

“They’ve got a total game.”

When the Highlanders played the Lions last year in Johannesburg they set up a healthy half time lead but the Lions stormed back to win the match 28-23.
