Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske has confirmed that Juan Smith will take up the reigns as captain again now that he has recovered from a knee injury which plagued him in 2009.

Smith has been something of a talisman for the Cheetahs and is a favourite with the Bloemfontein based team.

His knee injury kept him out of rugby for five months and sustained the injury getting out of his vehicle and the injury needed corrective surgery.

Smith’s last game of rugby was for the Springboks in September during the TriNations in Brisbane when the Wallabies beat the Boks.

With 62 tests to his tally, he is by far the Cheetahs’ most experienced player.

Drotske says that this is the first time in a long time that Smith has been able to participate with the pre-season warm up as he was not involved with the Boks late last year.

“Normally he is quite tired after a long season with the Boks. ” said Drotske.

“We definitely expect big things from him.”

Meanwhile as the Cheetahs lost Jacques-Louis Potgieter who moved to the Bulls at the end of last season and it is expected that Naas Olivier will be the first choice fly half with support from Louis Strydom, Sias Ebersohn and Rian Smit.
