The Cheetahs have been dealt a blow before the Super Rugby season has even begun as Captain Juan Smith has been ruled out of the match against the Sharks with a calf strain.

Philip van der Walt will come into the team in his place and Adriaan Strauss will take over the captaincy in Smith’s absence as he did last year.

Former Sharks centre Andries Strauss has been named to face his former team and Naas Olivier will partner with Sarel Pretorius and 9 and 10.

“A possible victory over the Sharks will probably depend on how we can prevent their loose forwards gain momentum.” said Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske.

“Our defense will be crucial to stopping their loose forwards for the advantage, “added Drotske.

The coach added that Kabamba Floors has been named in the team at eigthman due to his defensive capabilities.

“Nobody can question Kabamba’s ability as a defender.” he said.

Floors inclusion comes at the expense of Ashley Johnson who the coach said was not sharp enough to start the match.
