The Boland Kavaliers will be looking for a winning start in their opening Currie Cup rugby match against the Leopards at Wellington on Friday.

Coach Deon Davids is fully aware that winning home matches is not negotiable.

“It is a very tough competition and therefore it is of utmost importance to win your matches when you play at home.

“We believe we are set for a very good season, but then we have to play to our true potential come Friday.

“A win will certainly lift the spirit in the squad.

“However, I have a lot of respect for the Leopards.

“I think they’re a quality outfit and their coach Chaka Willemse has proved himself to be one of the best,” Davids said.

Davids said he is happy with his mix of experience and youth in his squad and he expects his team to be far more competative than last season.

“At the end of last year we went on a strenous conditioning programme which I believe will do the trick for us this year.

“My players are fitter and stronger than in 2008. Most of them has put on more bulk after six months of hard work in the gymnasium.”
