The Boland Kavaliers romped to a 33-11 win over a spirited EP team in their friendly rugby match played at the EPRU Stadium on Friday night after leading 12-11 at half-time.

As the scoreline suggests, the first half was closely contested, with the new-look EP team highly impressive in the second 20 minutes of the half.

However, it was a different story in the second half with the Kavaliers adding three tries to the two scored in the first half.

Despite suffering the defeat, the EP team showed on several occasions that they could well be a force in the Currie Cup first division this season.

Boland took full advantage of the yellow carding of Jacques Potgieter soon after the restart and they ran up 14 points during his absence.

It must also be remembered that this was the first time most of the EP players played together as a team.

Though they started off rather shakily in allowing the Kavaliers to run in early tries by wing Mark Harris and flyhalf Elgar Watt with fullback Justin Peach succeeding with a conversion, Michael Vermaak’s team came back strongly to reduce the half-time deficit to only one point.

The Kavaliers certainly deserved their win and the way they increased the pace of the game in the second half proved too much for EP but the Bolanders may well battle when they compete in the A section this season.
