Sharks beat Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth

The first South African derby match for the 2016 Super Rugby season is between the Southern Kings and the Sharks in Port Elizabeth.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick off.

Joe Pietersen kicks off and the Kings are back in Super Rugby.

3.00: The Kings run the ball at the Sharks but they lose it forward and knock on. Sharks scrum.

4.00: The Kings kick to the Sharks. Pietersen kicks it back. Engelbrecht gets the ball and charges forward. After a couple of phases aggression spills over. It calms down and the Sharks kick for touch with a penalty.

7.00: The Sharks concede a penalty for retaliation. The Kings work the ball into the Sharks 22 and then win another penalty. They kick for touch and take the line out.

8.00: The Kings win the line out and drive over and score. TRY! No wait, we are now going to the TMO for a review. The try was awarded and now its under review. TMO says the try for Chris Cloete is good but Martin Ferreira of the Kings threw a punch after the try so the Sharks will have a penalty after the conversion.

11.00: The conversion is missed.

12.00: The Sharks kick for touch with the penalty.

14.00: Joe Pietersen goes for the drop goal but misses. The Sharks have a penalty anyway so Pietersen gets another shot. This time he nails it.

17.00: The Sharks win a line out and pass the ball down the line, the ball goes to ground but Willie le Roux grabs the ball and passes out wide to Odwa Ndungane who scores. TRY!

18.00: Pietersen misses the conversion.

22.00: JP du Plessis almost gets through the Sharks defence which excites the home crowd but he is then caught and the Sharks stop the attack.

27.00: The Kings win a penalty. Elgar Watts lines up, takes the kick and nails it to level the scores.

30.00: The Sharks push the Kings back into the 22. They keep the pressure up and Jean-Luc du Preez bashes his way to the line, he reaches over and scores. TRY.

31.00: Pietersen adds the conversion.

37.00: The game is held up with an injury to a Kings player. The game resumes with a scrum.

39.00: The Sharks win the scrum and run at the Kings. The Kings however tackle the Sharks and turn the ball over and kick deep. Le Roux dots the ball down for the 22 drop out.

41.00 : Penalty to the Kings. Watts kicks for posts but misses. Its half time.

Elgar Watts kicks off and the second half is underway.

42.00: The Sharks get the perfect start as Willie le Roux sells a dummy on the half way line and races for the tryline and scores. TRY! That’s a try for Le Roux on his Sharks debut.

43.00: Pietersen takes the conversion kick and nails it.

45.00: Penalty to the Kings. Jurgen Visser takes the kick but misses.

47.00: The Kings are tiring as the Sharks move the ball down the line with speed and Paul Jordaan slips through and scores. TRY!

48.00: Pietersen adds the conversion.

52.00: The Sharks win a penalty but the quick tap does not go to hand so the Kings escape conceding a try.

55.00: The Kings turn the ball over and attack down the wing, Malcolm Jaer makes huge ground but the Sharks cut him down. The Kings recycle and change sides but the final pass is forward.

59.00: The Sharks stretch the Kings defence on the wing by sucking in defenders and a hole opens up for Lwazi Mvovo.

60.00: Joe Pietersen adds the conversion.

70.00: The Sharks work the ball down into the Kings 22. They win the line out and drive over the line. Marcell Coetzee’s easiest try yet. Kings starting to crumble. Oh Wait, we are going back to the TMO to review the try. No try as there was an obstruction. Try is reversed. Penalty to Kings.

77.00: The Sharks break and Odwa Ndungane races down the wing and reaches for the line to score his second try of the match.

78.00: Pietersen adds the conversion.

80.00: The siren sounds but the Kings have the ball on the Sharks tryline.  They go through the phases but time runs out and the ball is lost.

Thats it, the Sharks win with a bonus point.
