Pumas lock Johann van Heerden scored a try five minutes from full-time in Welkom on Saturday to help his team beat the Griffons 30-24 in a Currie Cup First Division fixture.

The previously unbeaten Griffons could only manage to score one try and a penalty try to the visitors’ four tries.

The Griffons led 24-23 five minutes from full-time thanks mainly to the boot of flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter, who kicked 14 points.

Cheetahs number eight Ashley Johnson was the mainstay of the Griffons pack and Howard Noble impressed when he came off the bench, but the Purple People Eaters couldn’t produce their sparkling form of earlier in the season.
