The Leopards will not be too welcome in Welkom after drawing 33-all with a patched-up Griffons side on Friday night after leading 21-5 at half-time.

A monster penalty kick from the local flyhalf Tiaan van Wyk which narrowly missed the poles saved the Leopards from another humiliating defeat in a game they should have walked.

A hard week and too many changes when clearly in command nearly had the Leopards’ undoing, but it should be a worry when an A section team cannot put a little brother away.

The Griffons had many reasons to smile and Van Wyk was one of them.

The young flyhalf missed with a few vital kicks but it seems that the locals have unearthed another Eric Herbert. The Leopards ran hard at the Griffons in the first half before they ran out of steam and cohesion.

Former Cheetahs stalwart Eddie Fredericks, who joined the Purple team on short notice, scored one of their four tries.

Scorers:

Leopards:
Tries: Nicky Kritzinger (2), Michael Bondesio, Japie Nel, Russell Jeacocks.
Conversions: Colin Lloyd (3), Chris Erasmus.

Griffons:
Tries: Werner Griesel (2), Eddie Fredericks, Rudolf Steyn.
Conversions: Tiaan van Wyk (2).
Penalties: Tiaan van Wyk (3).
