The Emerging Bok tighthead prop Phillip Lemmer, who also won national colours in wrestling, is the latest signing by the Leopards in their effort to be competitive in the 2009 Currie Cup Premier Division.

Lemmer anchored the Emerging Boks scrum against Georgia, Italy and Romania in the Nations Cup in Bucharest this year and has played Currie Cup rugby in the top section since 2005, when he made his debut for the Lions.

The double international has since also represented the Valke and the Cheetahs in the Currie Cup proper and his experience of playing in the big league will stand the Leopards in good stead.

Lemmer will compete with Dietlov Coetzee, who was the player who improved the most during the season and another former UJ player, Os van der Walt, for the tighthead berth Lemmer captained the Valke at the 2001 Craven Week at Rustenburg and was named Player of the Year for the Lions Under 20s in 2003.

His extraordinary upper torso power and his athleticism have always been key to the big tighthead’s game. His work-rate and all-round fitness will fit Leopards coach Chaka Willemse’s requirements.

The Leopards have also bolstered their ranks with Lions flanker Wilhelm Koch and Puk scrumhalf Jean Tiedt, who are both quality players.

The full list of acquisitions will be announced soon.
