In an effort to beaf up his pack, South Western District Eagles coach Johann Lerm has decided to experiment with Brive lock Wickus Liebenberg as a No 7 flanker for Friday evening’s compulsary Currie Cup friendly rugby match against the Cheetahs at Outeniqua Park.

With Liebenberg at the side of the scrum, Henry Grimes and Hein Potgieter will take the field as the lock combination.

Liebenberg is a tall and strong player and could give Lerm extra options if he succeeds on the flank.

Lerm has also opted for Bevin Fortuin (pictured) as inside centre, paving the way for Bobby Joubert to return at fullback.

Fortuin will also lead SWD in the absence of Rayno van der Merwe, who is still sidelined with injury.

Jandre Blom, who was the Cheetahs’ top kicker in the Vodacom Cup competition, will start at scrumhalf, but will probably move to flyhalf in the second half.

The SWD team is:

Bobby Joubert, Norman Nelson, Izak Saayman, Bevin Fortuin (capt), Baldwin McBean, Ricardo Croy, Jandre Blom, Jacques Engelbrecht, Wickus Liebenberg, Victor Joubert, Henry Grimes (vice-capt), Hein Potgieter, Wikus Harmse, Ashton Constant, Jaco Terblanche.

Replacements: Wayne Bennett, Tiaan de Kock, Giant Ntyanda, Denzil Manual, Warren Malgas, Jandre du Plessis, Mark Esterhuizen.
