Lions announce 2008 Super 14 squad

Lions coach Eugene Eloff has included five players who are currently on the injured list in his 29-man Super 14 squad.

Appointed captain Ernst Joubert (back), Anton van Zyl (neck), Willem Alberts (knee), Joe van Niekerk (back) and JC van Rensburg (shoulder) have been selected.

The latter was injured against the Sharks in Wednesday night’s warm-up match, while the other four were not considered for the game.

Of the five, Van Zyl and Van Niekerk should be fit for the first match against the Cheetahs on February 16. Van Rensburg’s injury still has to be finally assessed, and Joubert and Alberts are out for two to three weeks.

Willem Stoltz, who didn’t look fit enough for Super 14 rugby in his run against the Sharks, has missed out on selection but will certainly come into contention later in the competition.

Newcomers to the squad are Dusty Noble, Chris Jonck, Wigan Pekeur, Eugene Maqwelana, Ross Geldenhuys, RW Kember, Thabang Molefe, Alten Hulme, Gerhard Mostert and Joe van Niekerk.

The Lions squad is:

Jano Vermaak, Chris Jonck, Louis Strydom, Earl Rose, Rayno Benjamin, Doppies la Grange, Thabang Molefe, Jaco Pretorius, Jannie Boshoff, Dusty Noble, Wigan Pekeur, Louis Ludik, Jaco van Schalkwyk.
