The Highlanders return from their bye to face the Lions in Dunedin this weekend and have been boosted by the return of Adam Thomson in the forwards.

We are waiting for the kick off.

 

The match is underway. The Lions make a mistake from the kick off so the Highlanders have an attacking scrum.

 

1.00: The Lions concede the first penalty (Deon van Rensburg) so the Highlanders will kick for posts.

 

2.00: Lima Sopoaga kicks it well and the Highlanders have the lead.

 

5.00: The Lions regroup from a shaky start and attack the Highlanders and Dylan Des Fountain has a strong run. As they get to the Highlanders 25 they win a penalty. There was a period of sustained attack there and the Highlanders look tired.

 

6.00: Elton Jantjies takes the penalty kick and slots it. The scores are level.

 

9.00: The Lions are showing some good consistency with possession. They attack the Highlanders and the home team are caught not releasing so Jantjies has another chance to kick for posts.

 

10.00: Jantjies takes the kick and slots it. The Lions lead.

 

12.00: The Highlanders get some good line out ball and run it wide. They change sides and the passing is poor. They recycle and the Lions concede a penalty. The Highlanders look like they are coming off a bye as they are struggling with their rythmn. Ben Smith kicks for touch and sets up a line out in the Lions 25.

 

13.00: The Highlanders win the line out but the Lions play the ball on the ground and concede another penalty.

 

15.00: The Highlanders work the ball to the 5m line and the Lions defend. A knock on comes and we have a 5m scrum for the Highlanders.

 

16.00: The Highlanders win their scrum and they pass the ball to Shaun Treeby who literally puts his head down and bashes his was over the line busting two Lions tacklers out of the way. TRY!!

 

17.00: Sopoaga nails the conversion. The Highlanders lead again.

 

19.00: After the restart the Highlanders run the ball but knock on. Chris King concedes a penalty so Jantjies gets another shot at goal. He nails it.

 

24.00: The Highlanders hit back and pile on the pressure on the Lions in their 25 but they knock on as they get to the line.

 

25.00: As the Highlanders recycle they concede a penalty so the Lions kick the ball out to safety.

 

29.00: The Lions concede a penalty this time so Lima Sopoaga takes the shot at goal and nails it.

 

30.00: Wikus van Heerden comes off for a blood bin.

 

Ben Smith kicks for territory and finds big hole in the Lions defence. The Lions scramble in defence and give away a penalty. Sopoaga will kick for posts.

 

32.00: Sopoaga takes the kick and nails it.

 

34.00: The Lions open up the Highlanders as Doppies la Grange makes a break he passes to Butch James who passes too wide and too high so the ball goes out. Watsted break.

 

37.00: The Lions are growing stronger. They hold on to the ball and go through the phases and edge forward. They do however play the ball on the ground and concded a free kick.

 

39.00: The Highlanders have the ball as the siren sounds. Cowan kicks the ball out and it’s half time.

 

The half time score is Highlanders 16 Lions 9

 

The second half is underway.

 

43.00: The Lions start the second half with some strong tackling in defence but they also concede a penalty for offside.

 

44.00: Lima Sopoaga takes the penalty kick from in front. He misses.

 

49.00: The Lions win a penalty about 5m out after some strong running from the visitors. Strauss takes a quick tap and runs for the line, he is tackled but twists in the tackle and scores.TRY!!

 

50.00: Elton Jantjies takes the conversion kick and nails it. The scores are level.

 

54.00: The Highlanders concede a penalty so Elton Jantjies takes the kick and slots it. Highlanders starting to look frustrated as the Lions take the lead.

 

56.00: The Highlanders win a penalty so Sopoaga takes the kick and he nails it to level the scores.

 

59.00: Shaun Treeby gets the ball and breaks straight through the Lions defence (James). He races away and passes to John Hardie but he is just caught. The ball goes to ground and Nasi Manu is ripped over the ruck by his neck by a Lions player (Michael Rhodes) which could have crippled him for life. He gets up and puts a punch in and connects fully with the Lions player. A huge fight breaks out between the teams.

 

60.00: After the fight settles down the officials decide to carry on and let the citing officer sort it out. There HAS to be citings from this.

 

62.00: Anyway the Highlanders are on the Lions 5m line and the Lions have a scrum The Highlanders front row concedes a penalty so the Lions kick for touch but they don’t find it.

 

65.00: The match is pretty tense now but Ben Smith boots for touch and Jaco Taute goes to take the kick and drops it and the ball rolls out.

 

67.00: Penalty to the Highlanders. Hands in the ruck. Sopoaga takes the kick and nails it. Highlanders lead.

 

70.00: The Lions bring on Edgar Marutlulle for Bandise Maku.

 

72.00: The Lions are building territory but then as they start to look dangerous the Highlanders turn it over and attack.

 

74.00: Michael Killian comes on for Jaco Taute. The Highlanders seem happy to wind the clock down.

 

75.00: The Lions put together 11 phases on attack. They get to the Highlanders 25.

 

77.00: They go wide to Killian but he is caught. The Lions hold on and continue to attack. Just as the Lions look really dangerous they concede a penalty. The Highlanders kick for touch but can’t find it and the Lions get the ball to attack again.

 

78.00: The Lions work the ball straight back to the Highlanders 25. They get to about 5m out. They send wave after wave at the Highlanders from 5m out. They go over so we go upstairs to check.

 

79.00: Wikus can Heerden is awarded the TRY!!

 

80.00: Elton Jantjies takes the conversion and the siren sounds. The Lions win.
